bergere, I wish you had that magic wand too. Without that, I will keep you in prayers. People without a heart for animals do not understand how hard we try and how much we hurt. She has had such a wonderful life with you loving her. Bless you in this so very difficult time.

Thank you MZ. (hugs)
Broke down and called the Vet, she wants to do more tests. Not sure how I am going to pay for it. Will figure it out some how.

bergere, I'm so sorry you and Maggie are going through this. And having a vet that isn't listening only makes things so much worse. Maybe these new tests will lead to a different diagnosis and more effective treatment. Here's hoping!

I don't know if it would help, bergere, but you might want to google Dr Doug English, DVM, an Australian. He is using turmeric on animals and people as well. It is anti inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti fungal and has seen good results. I started my DD's old dog with hip problems on it and couldn't believe how much It helped. She went from sever limping to sound. If she misses a dose, I can see the limping again. I asked my rheumatologist if he knew anything about it last week, he said that they do think it helps many people, probably as effective as the strongest over the counter anti inflammatories, without the stomach problems and it's cheap. It might be worth a try. Dr English is good about answering questions which is nice.

I keep meaning to use turmeric on myself! Are there better brands/quality to purchase?

Yes, Thanks to you I found out Maggie has... Immunosuppression caused by a undetermined protozoan parasite. And she has some undisclosed Autoimmune disease. (pretty sure its just because of her Cushings) She doesn't have the parasite that causes EPM, but one of the other ones, that causes the same type of symptoms. Am not a crying person, but I did cry last night. If the Vet would of listen to me, should could of gotten help long before now. Heavy sigh ~~ I am keeping my fingers crossed, I can stop the damage and hopefully keep her going. I have been talking her on short easy walks,,, which seem to help and she really enjoys. Been putting her grazing muzzle with the hole taped, so she can be with her buddies for a few hours a day. Top that of Dyfra's allergies have gotten much worse... more drugs for her and an asthma med. I wish I never came to this State.

If she has a Protozoa, then I think any of the EPM meds would work for her? I don't know anything about the issues poor Maggie has, but I am going to ask my vet about it, just out of curiosity. Surely there is something that could at least help Maggie to live comfortably for a while longer...I'm so sorry that your vet wouldn't listen to you a couple of years ago, seems she isn't very proactive.
The good news is, they have come out with a much cheaper treatment for protazoa infections. I just treated a foster mare for 30 days, she did fine on it. It was about a hundred dollars for the meds.

Yes, same meds used in EPM works for most other Protozoan species. Vet is going to use Levamisole.... kind'a surprised me because its is used as a sheep dewormer.
Because of Maggie's Cushings, IR and founder.... most of the drugs used, she can't use.
I also started this....
Maggie is responding to me giving her these supplements, all human grade.... . Glad I had most here for various reasons.
L-Glutamine Lysine L-Leucine Vitman E and Sel This one will help a lot with her IR. Acetyl L-Carnitine
She also gets 1 ounce of Icelandic kelp per day.
It won't kill the PP, but it will help her in other ways. Also taking her for short walks. She is walking out a lot better. Not perfect, still unsteady in her back half but better than she was, also seems a lot happier.
Hope, once the Vet gets the Levamisole sent to me(for free Thank goodness).... that will help her even more. Though am not sure I can ever fully cure her but I am going to try. I should at least be able to get her moving better, more comfortable.... and she gets to stay with me for many, many more years.

I asked my vet about Maggie's issues, specifically the Levamisole, she agreed that it would be Maggie's best bet. I wasn't questioning anything about what your vet has said, I only was interested in learning more myself about these issues in ponies as I have a pony mare myself:-)
She was just at a convention in Florida that specifically talked yesterday morning in a session about this exact issue that Maggie is having. It would seem the Warmblood community is having issues similar to this with their horses, there is a big study going on with that group, as well as the pony group. Lots of great research is going on right now, and I hope that Maggie will benefit tremendously by this:-)

Am also hearing more and more about horses and ponies that are having these same issues. Horrible thing to deal with.

Didn't do a thing for her. My Vet seem to think it would make her all better? Keeping with the supplements and ACE, that seems to help the best. Take her on short walks too, that also seems to help.
She has pulled all the backing out that I used inbetween the Oak boards to keep the Red Wasps from building nests(nasty creatures) and she is rearranging the broom and apple pickers... While she still walks slow and stiff, she is feeling well enough to get into things. LOL

So that obviously leads me to think your vet is probably incorrect on the diagnosis.....if it is a navicular issue, there is a good treatment that can be used. Grr, I so wish my vets could see Maggie and help yu guys.

Maggie had xrays of her hooves awhile back, there was no rotation. Did not look into Navicular as far as I know. I agree with you.... sadly I am stuck with this Vet.
Do trust my Farrier, he is really good.. I will bounce that off him this friday. Maggie has had her hooves tested, last time no reaction.
Am thinking more on the lines of PSSM2. She gets worse if she doesn't move, and what ever is going on, the wobbles are coming from her back.
If it was an EPM type bug.... as long as she had it, will take years to heal... if ever, no way to know how bad the damage is.

I'd like the chance to have my vet look at them and see if another set of eyes might help?

She never sent me a copy.... so I will ask. Ok, if she does send them to you, would you email them to me? I'll pm you my email addy:-) Also, if she didn't respond to hoof testing, that would not rule out Navicular at all. It would rule out Laminitis possibly, or it could rule out abscesses. I imagine it would definitely rule out a founder issue, though without x-rays you really can't be positive...
