Greetings I know pine/fir chips/needles mulch isn't good for veggies but we got 2 big piles for free from the electric company trimmers that went down our road (two 5-6 yard piles). I have plenty of paths and weed/grass spots to bury! Wellll,it's about 1/3 moist But I read about all that resin spontaneously combusting fairly easily. When I was hauling off the sunny ends yesterday I Really noticed some hot spots, even steam, while forking out into the wheelbarrow but not smoking..... It's about 85 out these days and I sure don't want the piles catching fire but couldn't find how Hot it has to be outside to cause it to happen. BUT I hate to water them if I don't Have to; since the hauling will weigh twice as much or more! It won't be raining here soon either though. We Did connect two hoses and have it laying out there "at the ready" (our gravel and chip piles are 200 ft from the house but very near our wooded perimeter). Anyone have experience with This kind of mulch pile? Thanks....

The piles are doing exactly what they are supposed to do. That is, to use the nitrogen to break down the carbon. It could combust but would need a much bigger pile than a truck load. It's composting, feel blessed!
