One of the things I'm bringing home from my sister's house is the old outdoor storage tank for her (long defunct) oil heater. I'm sure it's probably full of sludge. I would like to get it cleaned out and use it to store either diesel or gasoline (Pri treated fuel either way). It looks like about a 150 gallon tank, and would be a lot better than storing fuel in 5 gallon buckets or gas cans. Can anyone here tell me the easiest way to clean it out? Can I cut the sludge with gas or kerosene? Is there a better way?

Can I cut the sludge with gas or kerosene? Is there a better way? I'm gonna be as nice as I can. Lol The sludge is the least of your worries. Flush it with the original fuel, number 2 I presume. Where do you dispose of it? Oil furnaces are filtered to burn some pretty nasty stuff if the tank and nozzle filter are in check. The next concern would be the shellac/tars dissolvable by your hotter fuel. Sea Foam is good, but is it good enough? Are your going to, do you, have the time to steep the tank? Is there a bottom dead center drain? Water, especially when only part full, can be a big issue. Filters for water, particulates, and colloids, are mandatory. Above or below ground? Permits? You're playing with fire, a big fire. |
