After the gas shortage here a couple of weeks ago, am on a mission to store more gas. There's 5 gal one on CL for $5. Looks sandy/dirty on outside. What would inside be cleaned with for proper gas storage? Waiting on reply about what was previously stored in it. Thank for all the good info have gotten from here.

If you have any doubts, you will lose more in ruined gasoline or time and effort to clean it, than you save on the can.
There is a gas can thread I started up in homesteading forum, some time ago I guess. I finally bought a plastic 5gal can from Wally for $12 (they had been lot higher). It was solid rigid one, not the super thin flex one. And being new, it was clean. But I had to un-EPA the spout (remove the spring loaded valve thingie and used aluminum tape to block the opening left on side of spout) and add a vent (metal tire valve minus its core) to make it convenient to use. I prefer the metal cans, but they have just gotten crazy price and lot of them are Chinese ones that rust quickly with the alcohol gas. You can just get the old style spouts on ebay or amazon but they arent cheap and basically double price of your can.

There used to be a liquid that I used to restore old motorcycle gas tanks with. You would of course empty it and allow it to dry, then tap out any loose dirt and debris. Then I would pour the liquid into the tank and slowly rotate the tank until the liquid coated the entire inside. Then I would allow it to dry. It would seal the tank and prevent any leaks. It also kept any dirt "locked" onto the tank and not into the fuel. It basically put a plastic liner in the tank, once it hardened. This was many years ago, and I don't remember the name of the stuff. I used it on multiple tanks when I was redoing older motorcycles. It kept the bottom of the Teardrop tanks from rusting out and being completely ruined.. It also saved me big bucks by not having to find other, hard to find tanks..
