Shocked to see a fox chasing this little rooster. When we realized what we were seeing, let our lab mix out. She chased the fox across the road....rooster got away. This rooster stays out late until all are settled in the coop since he is one of three roosters and the underdog. We will need to be vigilant for this fox as he/she knows where a meal is located. Free ranging chickens can be tempting.

A Fox tends to be a creature of habit. He will be back.
I'd look into setting out some traps

I've found that #6 shot in a 12 gauge load, and fired at 50 feet, seems to stop foxes DEAD in their tracks!!!
No repeat customers.

Haven't seen Fox again but have firearm ready. We watch for him at the same time every day when that rooster is waiting to enter the coop. Free ranging chickens will make an awful fuss if something isn't supposed to be in the yard. Thanks for the suggestions.

Fox has been back two more times since then. A few minutes ago I saw it running across the front yard. And, of course, the chickens are free ranging. Dog and I looked for the fox but didn't see it. Just as we came back inside, the dog spotted it sitting in the road just watching our property. Dog again chased it across the road into the woods. This is not going to keep it away because our dog stays mostly inside. Unless a person is constantly vigilant, it will be difficult to keep it away.....next step will be? They are beautiful creatures but can be so destructive. So far only one hen is missing.

My daughter and I saw a fox in the neighbor's field across the road from us yesterday morning. Sure hope he doesn't come our way!

Good luck, because our experience with foxes and coons has been that once they find a meal source, they just keep coming back until you can do something to eliminate them.

I ended up having to confine the flock to about a 1/4 acre paddock close to the house. I only have 20 so it's still plenty of room for them. No losses since then. I had losses at all times of day and when it got my darkest egg laying black copper Marans hen, I'd had enough. Since then I've had 4x4 woven wire installed everywhere and added two more LGDs but i find now that I'm enjoying not having chicken poo on my porches as well as not having craters dug in my garden beds, lol . Editted to add: And yes...... They will NOT stop once they start. I thought at first that letting the flock out a few hours later would work....... NOPE. Then I tried locking the flock up for a few days hoping it would get the fox to move on..... NOPE.
