Hatched out 8 Belgian d'Uccle chicks, will either be Buff, Buff Mottled and I think one will be a Blue Millie, if it runs the same way as the past chicks. One was a fighter, still pipping the next day. So I helped, had wry neck so I gave it vitamins and a couple of hours... Poof! All better. Gave them the Mareks vaccine the next day. Keep fingers crossed for the shipped eggs. My Postal person tossed the box over the gate. Marked eggs are the ones I had shipped. Cleaned out the incubator and put in the d'Anver eggs Kristen sent me and some more d'Uccle eggs. Also picked up 4 Splash Marans chicks from a friend. So the top of my double deck brooder has the d'Uccles, bottom part is for the Marans. Will have to shift the Marans out in a month.... big breeds just get too large and messy to be in the house long.

I tried hatching some of the Marans eggs with no luck, I am on my Third try now, 7 eggs is bator.....then my Anatolian dog attacked my Maran hen, she is Alive and doing well thank goodness but hasn't laid an egg for a week now.....My last try I did end up with two chicks but they are Maran and Comet cross....So I have two chicks that I don't want but since I brought them into this world I will raise them up for here at home site.....the 7 eggs in bator now are due to hatch in about 7-8 days so we will see.....

I had major problems hatching out eggs of my bantam white Ameraucanas. Finally figured it out when DH hard boiled some of those eggs and the membrane was so super thick, he was complaining about it. LOL Once I knew that, had to help every single chick out. Always something.
Friend gave me 5 Marans eggs 4 hatched with no issues, the 5th wasn't fertile.
Keeping my fingers crossed this batch of Marans eggs hatch for you!! Glad your hen is doing better. Might take awhile for her to lay again.

Love the muffs and beards on these chicks! Getting some feathers now. First of this color. I have no white hens. So maybe a super pale Butterscotch mottled. Time will tell. Buff... This is Dexter, a Splash Millie, no spur growth. He is the sire of all my d'Uccles hatched here. He is mad when I took this photo, had de-wormed and dusted him. LOL His comb is not blue, he has "No Pick" on him because the hens are picking out his beard and muffs again. I also cut/trim, his very long and full foot feathers. Keeps him from tearing them up.

Lovely chicks bergere !! So glad you are up and running better, praying for you!! I have 7 chicks out of 3 hens right now. We had a skunk and then an opossum raid my coop in the last few weeks, really took a horrible toll on my eggs. I did get a lovely little grey Silkie chick, hoping it is a hen. Also have some red Silkies in this batch. Haven't had those for a couple of hatches now, so am excited for that.

so cute they are bergere, I've never seen a rooster like Dexter...pretty cool looking! I would think it would be hard to cut his feathers? He's not a scary rooster? I was petrified of roosters when growing up, they always chased me!

I did find some Lidocaine patches... which help a little bit. Kept pulling away from any contact with people, but I am making myself visit online places more. Yikes... Sorry to hear the predators. Am hoping they won't be back. Look forward to Silkie photos!!

I was petrified of roosters when growing up, they always chased me! Thank you. He is a pretty good rooster. LOL I pick him up and he stays very still. He has learned to let me do what I need too... and he will get put down faster. If I don't trim his foot feathers, they get torn up really fast, break off and can bleed.

Thank you WP.
Sadly, there is no cure. Just something I will have to deal with.

Aw bergere, I'm sorry to hear that you aren't feeling better. My heart and prayers go out to you my friend.
I have two pony mares in my barn now with the same issues Maggie dear is having. It is hard to watch:-(. But, they seem to appreciate the time out on soft, green grass and being groomed a lot, so I take comfort in that. One is only 6 years old, the poor girl, but she hobbles around like she is ancient. The other girl is 22, so she actually has a little reason to hobble:-)
I am glad to see you here more often, I really love seeing all you do with those gorgeous chickens of yours! How are the Pigeons doing??

((hugs)) And Thank you Connor.
Sorry to hear you have two going through the same thing Maggie is. You are right, is hard to watch. sigh ~~
Maggie was sweating up a storm in the 80* weather yesterday. So I roached her super thick and long double mane and clipped her neck and chest. Clip job is a bit rough.... but it Will give her some relief from the heat.
Pigeons are doing well. Creme Lucernes have their first squeaks and quite sure they will be good parents.
The Indian Fantails.... two sets of squeakers and they did not make it. I don't think they are going to be good parents. They will sit on the eggs, but seem to not want to sit much once they hatch. They are on their third set... will give them one more try. If they mess up this time. Won't allow them to hatch any more eggs. Will give their eggs to the Lucernes to hatch and raise.

Yes, there are good birds which are bad parents. Keep a pair of big homers as surrogate parents. They make great "pumpers". That is, they can really pump a lot of food into the chicks. Martin

bergere , I have also roached a few manes this year, mostly on my little ones. They are super cute with their manes roached! I also had to do a few of my big horses, but they are much more comfortable without the heavy manes. I have several chicks now. One I had to bring in, a tiny little Silkie chick. She was outside of my coop too many times, no hen around, so I brought her in. I don't know why they wouldn't take care of her, or him, but it is a lovely little grey chick wtih a ring around its neck. I'll post a pic soon. It is thriving in the brooder in my office:-)

Roach manes are cute. Glad you found the wee one, look forward to photos!
