Some of my chickens are eating their feathers. I know that this happens sometimes due to low protein. I have scrambled them some eggs (with the shells for calcium), to help increase their protein intake. They love the treat I'm just not sure how much I can give them, with it causing them to get sick. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I would go with a cheap dry cat food. It's super high in protein, cheap and the chickens think they've died and gone to heaven. It has always worked for me!
Welcome Bubbe, nice o meet you! And we LOVE macmad!
(macmad, I'll tell you where to send my check!)

I agree with the other ladies as far as the cat food. I usually dole some out when they are molting... As a matter of fact I have one girl molting now for some reason-she looks terrible! When your birds are about to molt - Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens says to toss them a handful of dry cat food every other day until the molt is over. This I found interesting - the book also states - Some poultry folks use dog food, not realizing that dog food (like chicken feed) gets much of its protein from grains. Cat food, on the other hand, contains animal protein, which is rich in the amino acids a chicken needs during the molt. ~Mari

I occasionally feed my chickens cooked eggs, usually duck eggs when the pigs don't get them. I don't think you can overfeed them. They'll just stop eating when they've had enough.

My chickens also get any meat scraps left over after dinner. They love it!

I've never felt comfortable feeding chickens eggs. I'd much rather give them something else. It sort of feels like cannibalism, and I know I'm not fond of that idea in humans. (Wasn't there a movie about what happens to cannibals? Something kinda like mad cow?) I've never felt good about cows eating cow parts, pigs eating pig parts, or chickens eating chicken parts. It just seems unnatural in my mind. I know, people do feed eggs to chickens and they seem to be fine. Still just kinda goes against my grain.
To each their own, no offense intended.

I tried the dry cat food. The girls picked up a piece, then dropped it. None of them liked it. But a stray cat did, about 9:30 at night. I'm going to put the dry food in a food processor tomorrow, to make the pieces smaller.

This will stop all feather eating and other issues. Chickens do need meat or insects in their diets to stay healthy. (annndddd,, I should of read all the other posts first. LOL )
