It is too early to determine on whether he will work out, but I introduce Hero, a Pry/Anatolia mix that is a year old. He is uncut, and I was wondering when you think I should have him neutered. I have heard all the way up to 2 1/2 years. If so another option is a vasectomy, which I guess would keep him from breeding everything in site, but give him the testosterone he needs for full development. What say ye?

I think I will give it another six-months. I actually want him to be "in" with the goats, but I also plan to continue to walk the property lines with him in hopes that he will get the idea of where to protect if he is out.

@macmad , What is Hero's history?? He is very nice looking.....
Another thing along with what @redfish said is sometimes it depends on neighbors and how close they are, one of my farms has three LGD's all full brothers, one is intact and they are 4 yrs old and he has NEVER left the farm, NEVER......I don't have many neighbors at all near this farm, which means not many female dogs running around, we do get dump offs but still he has no interest in getting out I still have his daddy (at my other farm) who is 9 and he is intact still, but he gets off farm when we have strong storms with thunder and lightening, he was never this way for the first 6-7 yrs of life, but as he got older he is now scared of gun shots and bad storms.....

shellymay - history is a bit clouded although he was used to guard nine goats. The owners got two pyr puppies and they became concerned that Hero would mount the two females. I was thinking to myself, "self, why didn't they get him neutered?." Anyway I liked what I saw and thought he would be worth putting some work into him. I asked some in-depth questions and I was satisfied with what I heard.
The farmette I got him from wasn't very large. They had goats, chickens, ducks, geese and pigs. More than anything I don't think the place was large enough for the three dogs. Time will tell.

I'd say their loss is definitely your gain! And a vasectomy won't work, either. It won't stop him from mounting all the girls, just from getting them pregnant.
