LOL! So, it has been so hot here the past week that my little white Silkie hen stopped sitting her little clutch of eggs. It has been about 5 days since she last sat them, but I hadn't gotten around to pulling the eggs and throwing them out...which is a good thing since a little chick hatched this afternoon from that clutch!!! They are in the corner of my big feed room on a little alfalfa flake that a few of my chickens roost on. I was so tickled to see that chick today! Last summer I had tossed several eggs that the same hen left after a couple hatched. 5 days later I heard a peep, peep, peep coming from the feed bag I had thrown the eggs in, and sure enough, a tiny little black chick was in the bottom of the bag:-)
Ahhh, summer in Texas:-)

I wouldn't mind hatching out some chicks if one of my hens decided to go broody, but right now... nada.
We have a weird dynamic going on right now in our coop, due to a fox getting my "alpha" rooster and two of his hens. Only one of his hens remain and now she's on the bottom of the pecking order. My last rooster and his hens are horribly mean to the only remaining hen from the rooster that was killed.
I feel bad for her, but she's discovered some sneaky ways of getting out of the run and free ranges in peace away from the rest of the chickens. I just wish she would leave my flower pots alone. Its not like she doesn't have ACRES of other things to eat and scratch in!!!
