My cat Blackie has an abcess on his face. I can see the wound at the top. It isn't draining or festering. His face looked a little misshapen yesterday. It's quite large and feels firm. He let me touch, and didn't react. He's an outside cat with access to sheltered sleeping spaces. He won't tolerate being an indoor cat, and besides, both he and Hisser, though neutered, both took to spraying when I tried. So. The vet can see him tomorrow AM. He's due for his feline leuk shot, but up to date otherwise. I suspect the nasty big black cat that the renters across the street brought with them Anything you can suggest I should do for him today?

Warm compress if he will tolerate it.

Just try cleaning it out if possible. It could be a fly larva or similar, I've had that happen a few times on my outside cats. Best bet is have the vet take care of it...best of luck to you, hope you will update us!

I think he's is going to be fine. I was able to get a vet appointment for this AM. Difficult to get Blackie in the carrier, and then the abscess broke open in there. I felt awful, but the vet said it was good that it opened up. Long-acting antibiotic shot. I 'm keeping Blackie in the garage for a few days. If he will allow it, warm compresses to keep the wound draining. Thanks for asking

I'm sure the poor kitty felt better when it opened and started draining, even if it was messy. Keeping him in the garage is a good idea to keep the flies off of him while it heals as well.
Hope he's back to normal soon!

If it helps at all, I had a goat with a bee sting on her mouth that abscessed. I washed it gently twice a day with warm water and Hibiclens and gently applied a combination of antibiotic ointment + tea tree oil several times a day. I wanted to make sure the abscess didn't scab over right away and trap infection inside. She healed up very well. Hope Blackie heals up quickly.
