Well, he was a big one.....hubby beat him up good but he got away...he not only ate the eggs, he ate my small banty hen....we cannot move fast enough anymore....hubby came in and took an egg, put a teeny hole in it, added the fish hook on the fish line, and sealed it.....put it in the nest box but he has not taken it yet, but missing another little chick.....told hubby to take the frog gigger down there and get him good...LOL...we will wait and see....just part of country life, put up with the bad ones.....this snake is about five foot or longer...

Maybe it is a part of life but one I certainly can do without. A double whammie- predation and snake. I'm so sorry you lost your banty hen.

Put the hook egg right where he comes in. Keep the nests empty as much as you can.

I'm usually a live and let live kind of girl, but when it comes to anything messing with my chickens, look out! I'm sorry about your hen and chick, and I hope you rid yourself of that snake soon!

yes, indeed--i take the rifle-did you know if you hold the barrel towards a snake, they will follow the little hole in the end--keeps you from missing when you pull the trigger.dont like to kill anything--but dont mess with me or mine

Knock on wood, most snakes hate hot wire. Any way to run a couple of lines close to the ground around where you keep your chickens?
I have hot wire around my house/yard and two Turkey hens that hate and I mean hate snakes. Unlike my neighbors, so far any way, I have not had a copperhead issue.
Also see snake repellent in the stores around here, not sure how well it works... but might be worth a try.

I'm so sorry you lost your little hen and some chicks. I don't mind the snakes if they will stick to eating mice, but about the time I find one with eggs or chicks in it's belly, I chop the snake into little pieces:-)
