I was thinking about getting started in raising chickens and it seems like Dorkings are a good dual purpose bird but I can't find anywhere nearby that plans to sell them in the spring. Is there a drawback about them that I'm overlooking?

Hello theblackcrayon, I don't really have any great input for you but I don't like to see someone post and not get any replies... I didn't know what a Dorking was until I "googled" it just now. One site stated that due to their white skin - they weren't as popular here as they are in Europe... And I wonder perhaps if they aren't as popular because of their lay rate? They are pretty birds and it would be neat to have some around since they are one of the oldest English breeds. Just my 2 centavos ! Looks like you may have to mail-order them unless you luck out and find someone close to you that raises them. Seems like you don't see any chicks "out of the ordinary" in the Spring at the feed stores... ~Mari

I had Silver Grey Dorkings in the past and really loved them. Hard to find good Quality now a days. Is best to find a good breeder willing to ship chicks and eggs.
