We've had a new puppy for several weeks now. Our home is way off the main road with no close neighbors, so an outside dog will work well. How in the world do we get this doggie to adjust to the outdoors? It's time for her to begin to get use to it, but she refuses to stay outside unless we stay out there with her. She scratches at the doors and if that doesn't get us outside, she digs in the flower beds. She a sweet thing, but she has to eventually be an outside dog, except in inclement weather. I need your help!

countrylady, if she's a puppy, the digging, is normal. My boxer when a pup ate a hole in my kitchen sheet rock! I always used a crate for their sleeping and when ever we were out. Puppies like to bite and play! I would stay out with her for a couple of minutes, go back in. If she starts digging again, bring out a bone for her to chew on, to keep her occupied. Make outside fun for her alone. I'm sure you'll get plenty of advice on here. I just didn't want you to think no one would answer you. There's a few people on here who are having or did have similar problems. Mine were opposite...they wouldn't come in when I called them!

She is just a p puppy, which means she will get scared and lonely.
Play with her outside. Play fetch, play find the stuff I hid for you. Feed her outside. Choose a good spot and stick with it. Have her sit nicely and wait for you to put down the dish, then release her (at ease, go on, release, exit,...). This way, she is learning self discipline and a couple of commands.
I would also call her in while she is still playing. This makes it your idea instead of answering the whining, barking, and scratching. Start with her level of comfort. If she will occupy herself for five minutes, then call her at 4 1/2 minutes. Do this several times a day. Next day, make it five minutes. Next day, six minutes, etc.
You can get an older dog that is an outside dog. It is. hard to place older dogs and you may be able to get a retiree that would suit your place. Having a friend with her wold make her feel more secure.
