We opened up the hive this evening to verify the queen made it out of her cage. She's out. But we were blown away by how much comb had been made in 3 days!! Also by how much of it was filled with "honey". We think we were able to identify a few cells with eggs. It's all new to us, so our eyes are not yet sure what they are seeing.
Best part we opened it, looked, pulled out frames, inspected and none of us got stung! There were five of us out there peeking. Guess we did it "right" that we didn't over alarm them.

Google some pictures of eggs. if you hold them just right in the sunlight you can see them better on fresh comb. On older comb it is much easier

Some of us need a big magnifying glass as well as our reading glasses!!! It sure is easier without a veil on though! Way to go with your first inspection ohiodreamer!

The local bee club has an "inside the hive" workshop this weekend (and it's free!). We are going. That should help us a bunch with what we are looking at. We've looked online, in books, etc but I just can't really learn that way. This class is exactly what I need. The fact that they are having it one week after the packages arrive is brilliant! We plan to come home that afternoon and do another inspection (day 6). That will help us reinforce what we learned. Then we'll leave them alone for a while.
