I wasn't really sure where to put this.....so....I'm here.
My old breadboard that slides under the counter, gave up the ghost and split a few months ago. I shopped around, no one is carrying them, except Amazon and they are $50 to $100, and you order them per size w/o parts of inches. So we need 15 and 1/2 inches x 3/4 inch thick x 24 inches long.
Lowes, no bread boards, Walmart no bread boards, Home Depot no bread boards, you either pay the premium price of ordering on the internet w/shipping invisibly tagged onto your price, or you make one.
If I bought the closest thing it would be 16 x 3/4 x 22. Then we'd have to spend the big money and still have to make cuts and sand it down to fit.
So finally DH put his mind to it and found a big board (glued strips lengthwise), 16 x 3/4 x 48 and cut it down and then sanded it down, and it is nice. $8 plus work.
I just oiled it with mineral oil, and I'm HAPPY!!!! I have a small kitchen with limited counter space and the bread board is where I do most of my work, so if you can imagine, this is good news! Be happy for me?

What an awesome deal - I'm happy for you! It's nice having a husband that could help you out like that - that's great! ETA - I have one at home like that as well - I'm very blessed. He has made a little cheeseboard similar to what you described. Some day he wants to make a new top for our stand alone cutting board cabinet thing. It is 24 x 48 - maybe someday! ~Mari

I might have to marry him again.

It's an electronic breadboard for creating your own circuits with plug in components.

Ken, too funny! I also have limited counter space in my kitchen. Whoever designed it was either cheap or smoking something. It's set up as a galley kitchen, but the "aisle" is 7 foot wide and dead-ends at an outside wall. Why in the world wasn't it set up as a U shape instead? It would have a lot more counter space and be much more usable...

It's set up as a galley kitchen, but the "aisle" is 7 foot wide and dead-ends at an outside wall. Why in the world wasn't it set up as a U shape instead? It would have a lot more counter space and be much more usable... Because the designer was undoubtedly someone who had never cooked a meal in their lives. My mother-in-law had one of the worst kitchens I'd ever seen. Huge kitchen but so poorly designed that it had little counter space, a serious lack of storage, blocked traffic flow and had a small, cramped working area with one narrow entry/exit. Even worse, despite the entire south wall having windows, the sink was placed against a dark inner wall, and a free standing pantry blocked most of the light from the windows. I asked her her one time how it ended up that way. Apparently her husband decided to surprise her with a kitchen remodel, which he hired someone to do while they were wintering down south. Mil's comment (which has become a classic in our family), "Never let a dairy farmer design your kitchen."

wildhorseluvr, you're definitely putting my kitchen in perspective with that story! I think the builder was actually cutting corners in my case. We actually have a chimney with no fireplace as well...

My Mom had a bread board that slid out from under her counter - hadn't thought about that for years. My MIL had a thing I'd never seen before. Open a cabinet door, slide out the shelf with her stand mixer on it and it lifted up so it was counter height. She could work on the counter top with the mixer on the slide out/up shelf and then slide it all back into the cabinet. Never could figure out how it could hold that big mixer full of stuff going around wildly. Hey feather, can you post a picture of your new cutting board? Sounds like a cool deal you DH was able to make.
