We've never done this but sometimes, hard to find her. Opinions wanted. If we did, any special paint needed?

Finding the queen becomes easier over time. The first 4-5 years I was keeping bees, I rarely saw her. It's not important to see her, you just want to see evidence that she's laying a good pattern.
If you want to mark your queen, practice on drones first, so you get used to holding them.
You can use enamel model paint (e.g., Testors), but easier if you buy a marking pen.
Personally, I don't mark queens.
