The foxes around here are about the size of a cat. But!!!!!I walked out on the porch and a full size Fox was loping across the yard to my chickens. My heeled took after it to no avail. I found 4 dead chickens 50 - 100 ft apart. I have never had fox trouble before . Is this normal kill?

Bummer. I hate that feeling when I find animals so carefully cultivated and cared for slaughtered.

I just did not know foxes killed so many and left them for the return trip! I now know two that are gone, the two frizzles which never roam far from the door of the coop. There seem to be maybe 3 more missing. Which would make 9. Yes they were free roaming, yes I need to build a pen.
The dead ones are now skinned, gutted and put in jars for processing for the cat and dog. I have a day trip coming up and they will stay in which they will not like.

It's very normal for them to kill several and carry off the bodies one at a time. You can set leg hold traps, or use a large live trap. A Fox won't go in a lot of the smaller live traps that work for Coons and Possums. They will continue to return as long as the food source is available. It's possible the "cat sized " Foxes you saw were Gray Fox, and the "full sized" is a Red Fox. The Red Fox will always have a white tip on it's tail, and longer legs than a Gray. www.bing.com/images/search?q=fox+red+versus+gray&go=Search&qs=ds&form=QBILPG

No doubt about this being a red fox. If anything it was big. I have a Australian Cattle Dog and though I am sure it did not match her in weight it was taller. Full coat , truly a beautiful animal. The other foxes that raise near here, when you see them sitting you think it is a cat. They are incredibly tiny. There is another den about 1/2 mile further and they are also tiny. They do not have the large ears.
Yes I have no doubt they will return.

Portable electric fencing should solve the problem. As long as they free range, the chickens are at risk. If you don't free range, but are using fencing, add electricity.

I’m so sorry. I am still shocked and saddened by a similar event with coyotes several years ago. We feel so responsible for our animals so it’s hard to not feel guilty. I learned and made changes but it really is nature’s way that we’re fighting against. Just tough.

So I looked out and saw a fox , grabbed my gun and headed out the door with my rifle. I slipped on something fell and shattered my hip. That fox was an expensive mistake. The chicks are staying in the coop, and I am I confined to the house .

The score is now Dustawaits 0, Foxes 2. Early innings though! Sometimes when I’m wrangling chickens I think I look like a cartoon - now I’m imagining you in one too. Best wishes for a full recovery!

I had emergency surgery early Sunday morning. A pin was put in and a new ball. Released on Monday eve i am now home and doing well for my age. I have had difficult moments but my daughter and her husband brought me home and left this morning for their jobs. A neighbor has fought over a daughter to do my chores ad stay with me. The surgeon said I came through the surgery in excellent shape . The therapist said I am doing excellent as well. I appreciate your concern!!!
