Heat index 106 deg, Need to bake bread, Prob won't; heats kitchen too much. For those with outdoor kitchens, Does heat stop you? Anyone else cut back on cooking/baking.

I cut back a lot in hot weather. On father's day it was 90 with high humidity. I barely got through steaming the asparagus and I thought it was ridiculously hot. I ended up hiding in the air conditioned bedroom which I hate to do during the day, being stuck in one room!
Usually I come out of the AC for an hour or two, until I'm almost sick from the heat, and then go back up to the AC, to cool down. Not my idea of fun.
I wanted to make cheese, it was too hot. Yesterday was our first 'normal', near 70's day, so today I'm making cheese but don't ask me to cook when the temperatures are over 82. I make sure there is food to eat, in the refrigerator, in the freezer, canned food, so that when the hot weather comes we don't starve.

Outdoor kitchen only, early May to October because we move the woodstove to the outdoor kitchen for the warm weather. We cook and bake early mornings. We do only cook once a day. Cooler evenings a fire feels good so do some then. No air conditioning here. We sleep in a screen room on warm nights....James

Maybe consider a solar oven. You only need to be outside long enough to get the food in it and make sure it's pointed correctly then come back after it's done cooking. Heat stays outside.

Air conditioning? Heat? HA HA HA HA HA.
We hit 89 in May for a few days, it was the hottest and driest May on record. Today 20th June we're sitting at 57...Depressingly that is more normal.

I'm sure there is some good reason why you haven't moved to Wisconsin. What would that be? We would be very nice to you too, you are welcome here.

It was just a tongue-in-cheek ribbing of, well, you know...it's Wisconsin. Heh, just kidding again. I'm sure Wisconsin is fine. I had a friend in the Navy that was from Wisconsin. It always amused me whenever he would say the word sorry (soar-ee).

In the heat (it's in the 90's with 80+% humidity and a heat index of 100+ for the last week and out as far as we can see), I switch to using the toaster oven for most things. Only 2 of us, so it's not too hard.

I have a second kitchen set up for canning so I bake in there during the hot summer months.

feather, sss3, For bread baking I pull out the old bread machine if it is too hot to turn on the oven. We have lived in many of our 16 places without a/c but when we moved to Central WISCONSIN Ken, that is for you!, we had not 1 but 2 a/c vents in the kitchen for fall canning/baking etc. I have had it with heat. We are solar powered and beyond net zero so we figure run it as needed. However, we are very stingy on heat as we heat with wood on our Lopi Liberty wood stove all winter/spring/fall. Only use "heat" when elderly inlaws visit.

In the summer we use a decent size toaster oven more than the regular oven. Doesn't heat up the kitchen as much.
Wish we had an outside kitchen....

Ken , Y es of course our heat is solar powered; our entire house, pole barn and all functions therein are solar powered and the net zero status just gives us $$$ back each year (which goes towards "paying" off what we paid for the PV and Thermal hot water system).
Also, we have 42 acres of oak trees here and just from the dead fall could heat 3 homes. No worries about cutting down good live trees. Winds take out 10-15 trees per year and we also have oak wilt in WI so we have lots of dead trees to choose from.
But we hate 'blower' anything and only tolerate a/c because of the pretty non-stop 80%-100% humidity and high heat around here from now till mid September. I grew up near Lake Michigan and lived near it until I was 58. Now, living here, I have had heat stroke/exhaustion 2x quite badly. Docs said it was cumulative and that once you get it, it will come on more quickly each time. So a/c is needed.
