My son brought this to me to fix. It doesn't have to be pretty. This is heavy duty, heavy lined 'like carhart' work coat. I can't take the cuffs off and shorten the sleeves because then it won't fit him. The zipper area has some wear too but fixing the sleeves will probably get him through this winter at least.
i'm not a mending expert -- but I know lots of people here have a lot of mending experience. I'm looking for suggestions. Thanks!

I have patched my work coats with either denim or canvas duck.
Cut a piece large enough to cover the frayed areas, plus about 1/4 on each side for hemming under to make a nice clean edge that won't fray. Then whip stitch in place.

If you can fit it over the arm of the sewing machine I would just start zig-zagging back and forth across it until you get all the edges sewed down. That will hold for a long time.
This is on denim but it gives you an idea:

krisinmi, Melissa, thank you both. Not sure yet what I'll do but it's great to have two experienced folks share their ideas.

You can buy iron on patches for jeans. Cut to fit, iron on, then sew around the edges if you can.
