Dh shot one, his friend shot one. They are done earlier than expected. 8 pt buck and young deer. On public lands in the testing zones. 2 kept off the roads!

We just got ours this afternoon as well. Three does since it was a doe only area. They had a buck hanging around making a nuisance of himself. Took forever to get the shots because he just wouldn't get out of the way. I think we put a dent in his romantic plans for the evening. my goodness, you might have hurt his feelings. lol, glad you were able to harvest some venison!

That's great to get the deer so early - and nice job on the 8 pointer! What is/are the testing zones?
It's been many years since dh quit the gun deer hunt and I miss it - we were reminiscing about it last night. Luckily we have family members and friends that still hunt, and they keep us supplied with venison. I grew up eating more venison than beef and I still prefer it.
One of our friends - who hunts a lot - commented that "our" deer up here are so tame he'd feel guilty shooting one. And he's right - they seem to have made pets out of us. A couple of weeks ago dh was in one of the sheds, saw a shadow - and looked up to see one of the at the threshold staring at him. They are crazy tame.

Thanks feather , I kind of thought it might be CWD-related. There was a deer (maybe more than one) that tested positive at a game farm in our county, so that affects not only our county but two nearby ones. I was surprised to see how many counties are now affected in one way or another.

In the testing zones, when you register the tag, you give them the head of the deer and you have your registration number. You give them your email address. In 10 days to 2 weeks they email you with the results, which means you can't eat the meat for that long. But you can can it and freeze it, and wait for results.
We had two in the testing zones, both came back clean.

uge old doe and small buck this morning. Planning to make a lot of chunks for roasts and steaks. Maybe even some 3" chunks for breakfast minute steaks. Also will make a broth with garlic and onions to use as juice for canning. Aim for at least 18 pints. Backing off on ground meat as there is still ample left from last year. May give the ribs from the doe to Tanzanian pals for grilling. Almost as good as pork ribs, especially sice she fattened on beans, not corn. We call them "pasture fed"!

I'm practicing "shoot and release" this year!I've only had one shot at 24 yards with my bow but somehow it was a clean miss! Wanting to get out during gun season but just was given a deer and having a hard time fitting it into the freezer. I'll have to pass until late season as I have eye surgery again Monday. That will keep me out of the field during rehab. Could get cleared as early as the 5th or as late as the 28th. My last surgery was on the 29th and I just got cleared on the 21st, yesterday.
No worries, God has a plan! Wade

Wade, there's a solution to the freezer problem, get another. Had 2 for years and then came home with 3 deer one night . Checked out Craigs List and found one barely 6 blocks away. Now one of the old ones is just for emergency.
The two deer tonight were shared with 3 Tanzanians, one Kenyan, and one Nigerian who we accept as an honorary East African. Everyone went home very happy with enough venison for a few meals. Still left more then enough for us two.

Martin, I just traded for another freezer. It will get here sometime within a month. I still won't be able to hunt until the doc says it's OK. Just too much to do before checking into the hospital by 3 pm this coming Sunday! Wade

On my way to town a very small ,very fat buckling crossed the road in front of me. He had 3-4 inch spikes that looked like they each had two points. I do not believe he was over 24 inches tall.

If you were in Florida, that would almost be typical of Key deer. In Missouri, should be normal white tails. With the antlers that you describe, would have been last year's drop. Even if from second rut period, should have gone into last winter bigger than that. Bad genes in there somewhere and his size means that the big guys won't allow them to multiply. Martin

We have white tails here. Reason I was surprised at his smallness. Usually if the deer are on a poorer soil they will be small but certainly not fat. This year in this county ....5 deer per tag. But who wants to shoot a skinny deer obviously with CWD when they can get a healthy deer?

Reminds me of some of our deer stories....hubby shot at it....ended up with just a tail....LOL...has never lived it down yet....and reminders of family that have passed but are always remembered..
12/23/06 A Family's Farewell -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ... Well, we have attended two funerals in two days. Todays was rough. It was very cold, we are expecting snow/ice starting later tonight. The stories told today were so funny, I had to share them with you. It seems Bob and his buddy got a couple deer and brought them in, and Auntie wanted "her part" so Bob took over her part of the deer. When she unwrapped the package, it was two ears and the tail !!!! They said later on they had a family dinner. All were around the big table, and what a spread there was, when Auntie announced she had fixed a special dish for Bob. She brought out a covered dish and put it in front of him....she had boiled the tail and the ears !! There was a lot of laughter today. They said Bob had his own cathedral, the outdoors, and his choir was the birds that sang. And to top it off, they played his favorite song....Baby's got her blue jeans on.... and they laughed and rocked to the song. Yes, we have a strange family but the memories we share last for a life time .And I do believe, if we listen closely, we can hear Bob whisper,""ain't it nice?

Dust, generally the deer that test positive here are older and skinny enough to notice without testing. That's why "wasting" is part of the name. I have learned to judge the quality of the meat and health of the deer by the amount of fat. During some drought years, I've shot deer that I knew would be in trouble if there was a hard winter. In wet years, like this one, that old doe from yesterday could have stopped eating now and still came out in decent shape. She was shot in "Southern Farmland" zone but not a hint of corn smell inside or in the fat. She got her fat from soybeans. Makes a huge difference in the taste of the meat.

The DNR is collecting , testing, pkg, all deer shot. ( turned in) Of course the diseased ones are disposed of but the healthy ones are processed free. I saw 7 bucks one morning , I am going to say 5 were CWD.

Of course, consolation is that CWD has never been proven to jump to humans. I hated it when testing was mandatory where I was hunting. Since the prions were mostly in the spianl cord, the only part where that is consumed would be neck roasts. Wasn't just the head that was taken with does but whole neck just ahead of the shoulders. Bucks were left intact but just a sample taken. Our extended family shot a lot of deer that were tested but nevere a positive.
