I have my number in the local newspaper to pick up bee swarms, so I tend to get quite a few "I have bees in my wall" phone calls. Today, I got a call from the sweetest retired widow lady.
She thought she had bees in her wall, so I went over to check. What she actually had was a swarm scouting, I think. Thursday I will go back and ensure the bees didn't swarm from the hole in her wall. But, after capturing the swarm in one of the trees in her yard, I am not entirely sure she didn't spray them with something. I have never had a swarm not fly like these did. They would fall off in clumps and crawl around in the grass.
I brought them home and stuck them in a disposable nuc box, just in case they were sprayed I wouldn't have contaminated equipment. She said they weren't. But, if not they have serious issues. Just keeping my fingers crossed now.

No. They all crawled out of the box and died right in front of it. It is so sad.

Well.....now we all know that she really wasn't that sweet..... and that she probably lied to you. Either that, or someone else sprayed them!

I still think he was sweet and scared of the bees. I hate that they died. But, you can't fix all fears on everyone. And being in the middle of bees actively leaving the hive is an intimidating moment.

I drove through a swarm yesterday, didn't realize what they was until I was into them, I was only doing about 15mph driving the swather down the road. Some time I need to pick up a nuc box and frames for when I stumble onto the occasional swarm.

allenw I never run into swarms in the wild. Only when people call or accidental ones from my hives if I don't pay enough attention.

Every 2 to 3 years I'll see a swam. I have a public hunting area north of me on the river I don't know if that makes a difference or not.
