The forsythia bushes on the north and east sides of my yard had widened to hedges some 10-15' across. I've made good headway cutting them back and digging up the big stumps. I've trimmed in the spring after they bloom, cutting back to the trunk as often as I can. But they keep putting up all these branches off old wood! Can't call them water sprouts, like on fruit trees, but remind of those. They're up to 7' or 8' long. Do I leave those till after the next bloom? Cut them back now? Thanks.

Know idea if its right way, but cut mine back right after they bloom. I trim them hard and keep them trimmed the rest of the year, in a somewhat rounded shape. They always come back and always bloom the next year. Am sure someone can give you a better idea.
