A little while ago I was headed back out to do some watering and noticed one of my chickens messing around with a little snake. This one looked totally different than the ones I normally see around here. I kept the chickens and the kittens at bay while I hollered for my husband to come and help me. He got it into a 5 gallon bucket so I could take pics of it. This little bugger spent most of it's time curled up and striking at everything. I'm guessing it wasn't more than a foot long or so. Any ideas?? I have subsequently released it down on the edge of the woods. Oh, it was hanging out under one of our lilac bushes in a mowed yard when I spotted the chicken attempting to work it over. I anxiously await ya'll replies! Thanks! ~Mari

I'm no snake specialist but I would guess it's a monarch snake. HAHAHA! I know where that comment came from! Oh my word... you do indeed crack me up my friend!! I can't wait to tell my husband - thanks for the laugh! ~Mari

Did it flatten it's head and act kinda like a cobra? If so, I'd say it is a hognose snake. My wife loves them...

Hey there feather, Bear Foot Farm, Cabin Fever, Woodpecker, Thanks for taking the time to reply to my thread. One of my buddies on here clued me in as to what it was. It was a Midland Brown Snake. I just love that video Cabin Fever of Wind in Her Hair. She is quite the cool lady! I just adore snakes but am afraid to pick them up for fear of getting bitten. I hope someday to overcome that. Her accent always puts a smile on my face I must say! Ya'll take care now! ~Mari

What accent? Cabin Fever, I'm with you when it comes to snakes. Genesis, Chapter 3 teaches us to beware of women bearing snakes.

Cabin Fever, I agree that it is a hognose. Had one in my garden spring of last year - feisty little guy. He curled and "struck" - one picture I have his tongue is out. We have eastern hognose in my area. Mine was more gray but he had been spending time under the leaves.

Yes, the snake in WIHH's video is indeed a Hognose snake. The one in my pic is definitely a Midland Brown. When you compare the two pics you can definitely see that the patterns (as well as colors) on their scales are totally different.
