I cleaned my strawberry bed out quite well in early summer, and have pulled tall weeds since. This week, I realized a LOT of creepy Charlie, wild violet, and clover has taken root in there, so I pulled lots of that stuff out. BUT now I see that there are plenty of runners that look healthy, but aren't rooted. Would you pull them to empty spots (or a new row) and see if they'll take? This is Zone 6A.

I have placed the runners in thin spots and also put them in a small cup filed with potting soil. .I also cut a wire hanger in about 6 inch length, bend into a U and it will hold the runner where you want it

Those that aren't rooted yet can be coaxed easily by scratching the soil, pinning them down and ensuring they stay moist for a few days. Prep the row now, go back when rooted and cut them free from the mother plant, transplant them at 12" spacing...you'll still have plenty of time to get them pretty well established before they go dormant.
Because they won't be anchored with deep roots yet, I would also recommend covering them with straw to prevent heaving during the freeze/thaw cycles. Next spring they'll take off and make lots of berries
Those in my avatar pic are planted thru black fabric...other than a few early weeds that pop up in the planting holes around the new plants, they stay weed free.
