As I'm looking at all the real estate ads for the Ozarks, I see lots of ads for places with stocked ponds and streams. Does anybody get enough fish to make a difference, from your stocked ponds or streams on your poperty? I never see any threads about raising fish for food.....

We raise yellow perch in our greenhouse. The extra went to the pond. The gravity spring feeds the greenhouse stock tanks, the overflow from the tanks and water used for the microhydro feeds the stream to the pond. This stream is the spawning area for the perch. We have to keep a double screened overflow to the county ditch. We raise them in the greenhouse because they grow a lot faster in the warm water. We also have a larger pond at the farm that is stocked with bluegill and largemouth bass. The creek here is not stocked, we are above the falls so all native cuthroat trout. I also fish below the falls, rainbow trout and spring and winter steelhead....James

Our pond used to be stocked with largemouth bass - was mostly fished out when the house stood empty. We know we have bluegill and grass carp in there. We're pretty sure we've seen some small largemouth bass. It's not a large pond, but we're going to throw a line in and see what we get - if we do have bass, we'll let them grow out a bit.

Trout do best here, with a flowing stream or aerated water. I have had trout but hard to keep alive in stillwater. I ran a nozzle from the microhydro waste water to the pond. Trout are slow growing, like cold water and lots of feed....James

Thanks for the link, Jwal - I'm reading about the bass and the bluegills....it says the pond has to be fertilized? How do you fertilize a pond?

....it says the pond has to be fertilized? How do you fertilize a pond? When we were kids and went swimming at the public pool, as long as the water didn't turn yellow right around you . . . . No one was the wiser. THAT was ONE way to fertilize it! I'd imagine that ponds could be done the same way.....

She posts pics on FB of some of her yummy meals. The catfish looks good. I'm not a catfish eater, so I've given the Hubs strict instructions that we are having lake perch.

I watched two of Misty Prepper's videos and really like them! I'd like to see those friends of hers she talks about.....sounds like th ere are some people REALLY living the old fashioned way down there in Tennessee!
People in Michigan don't eat catfish. At all. EVER. They absolutely can not believe that anybody would eat a catfish LOL. The local grocery store must have got a good deal on a mixture of different kinds of frozen fish - they had a freezer for each of like 10-12 different kinds of frozen fish. When I got there to check it out, all of the freezers were almost empty except the catfish freezer. Nobody had bought ANY!
I never learned how to cook catfish but always loved to eat it. When I get down there I'm going to have to learn to do it right!
Have any of you been running across the Asian Carp? I've been watching videos on how to cook it - supposedly it's better than walleye.

I eat Common Carp and Buffalo. Buffalo is real Good, so is Suckers.
The Catfish I posted in the Picture came out of my Sons Pond. To me the fish are less flaky and not the best flavor compared to Catfish out of the River or Lake.
These are out of a River

Roll in corn meal and fry until golden is my favorite way I like them about the size of a large ear of corn
Some like a stew made with bacon, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, and garlic then just before it's done, poach some eggs in the broth
Those taste best cooked and served on a river bank
I forgot to add Red Pepper or your favorite hot sauce to the mix
