I plant copious amounts of sunflowers every year and save the seeds.
This year, I bought seeds because I loved this particular color. When I plucked the finished heads to save the seeds.......some where black, some were white?
I have seeds from other sunflowers that are purple/pink.
The pedals were off, and the birds were starting to munch on them, so I 'assumed" they were done?
What say you?

They're ready...as a rule I wait until the back of the flower heads begin turning brown or have drooped down then cut them off. I rub away all of the dried flower on the face and stow the intact heads away and deal with rubbing the seeds out later (winter/spring) looks like I need a new host...photobucket is blurring outgoing pics of non subscribers
