Last evening our little dog ran out in the driveway as a small truck was leaving. He got sideswiped by the side of a tire. Driver didn't realize the dog had come out of the house. It was just one of those incidents of bad timing. The older the dog gets the less vehicle wise he is becoming. (He's 12+ now)
When he wasn't putting any weight on his back leg today we took him in to the vet. $340 later - from blood & urine work, a syringe of painkiller and having his nails done, we have him home again. Nothing is broken, but it's badly bruised. So I guess my question is - why the blood & urine workup to issue a painkiller? I asked the vet but didn't really understand the answer. It could be up to 48 hours before the results of the tests are done, and by then we'll have given him 2 or 3 doses of the painkiller.
Dog is lucky he didn't go under the tire - that would have been a whole different situation.

karenbc, what a bad luck thing. I'm sorry to hear of this. I hope the dog starts to feel better.

I was amazed - the vet phoned us this evening to see how the dog is doing. The lab rushed the blood work and it's in. The pooch has had his supper, painkiller and is tucked into his bed. Literally tucked into his bed.

The pooch has had his supper, painkiller and is tucked into his bed. Literally tucked into his bed. >>>>>>>>>>> Dog and I play this little game. He is in his bed, and I tuck his little blanket all around him while he gives me a fish eye look.
Last night after all the turmoil, I tucked him in, he just gave a big sigh and snuggled his head down on the cushion. Winston Churchill DeHounddog is going on 12-13 years old now. Vet saying he has some significant arthritis showing. Problem is he still thinks he is as tough as any bear or big dog in the province.
