Forgive me if this is in the wrong place.
I bought some bees wax to start making salves and lip balms. Anyone do this? Do you have any words of wisdom for a beginner or recipes?

I just made my first batch of dandelion salve. Billie shared the recipe for it. Super easy! Muller's Lane Farm makes her own I think.

I think ChristieAcres does as well. I make a few, but not like those ladies do!

I learned this last year when researching salves and lotions, and lotion bars, and lip emollients. If you are going to combine, oils/fats, wax(es), essential/fragrance oils, and any water based items to make a salve, you must bring it up to heat to dry it out, drive all the water out of it or it will grow bacteria in it. Putting a salve with bacteria on your face/hands/elbows/where ever, is not a good thing to do, it can't be healthy for you. So if you are going to do this, research it a bit and make sure it's safe. Now if you are going to make lotions or anything with water left in it, you need an anti-bacterial product/preservative to keep the water based part from growing bacteria. Here is a story about growing bacteria in lotions that's pretty interesting. www.makingskincare.com/preservatives/I make some lotion bars without water based ingredients or any water at all. Some stay solid enough to keep as a bar, some soften up too much in summer and I put them in a jar. It's fun and an inexpensive way to make your own skin soothers. The preservatives make it all pretty complicated.

I do not use preservatives in my salves. I have a few recipes on my website: www.mullerslanefarm.com/salvemaking.html, including my "Mommy Kiss-It" salve (named by my children when they were much younger). For lotions, I've been using Liquid Germall Plus about a decade and have never had problems with it. The usage rate is .1%-.5% of total formula and needs to be added after the lotion has cooled to below 122*F (50*C)

Hahaha, I think those are called children! Heh Heh Heh Heh That is what I was in the 60s & 70s and what my children were in the late 80's through early 00's The circle of life, right? At my house, the saying was, "The government outlawed the buying and selling of slaves, so we are forced to grow our own. Get your chores done!" No offense to anyone intended!
