I saw a pic of a coat rack built in between the studs of the wall and just couldn't get the idea out of my head. So y'all know what happen right? Yep, I now have a coat rack built in between the studs behind my front door.
I started by measuring and cutting out the drywall to the size I wanted. I think I cut it 54 inches high and then just right up against the studs along the sides. Then I built my basic box to make sure it was going to fit. The small shelf is for gloves, hats or whatever else they need up there. I added the board under the shelf to give me something solid to attach the hooks to. Once I knew it was going to fit I took it back out and added some bead board to the back to give it nice finish. I repeated this for the other boxes, then I attached them all to the studs.
ETA: I forgot to mention that I trimmed it out. I was able to use 1x4's and they fit exactly to hide all the edges. I did have to rip down the outer left one, but's it's not too noticeable since it's in the corner.
Since all the trim in my house is white I thought it was best to paint the coat rack white also. This was right about the time I realized my "white" door and trim wasn't as white as it looked. Then I added my fancy hooks, they were a little bit of a splurge but I love them. I don't know if can tell in the last picture but I painted the door and door trim. I'll get the baseboard later as I'm thinking I need to refresh the wall paint too. It'll be easier to paint it all at once since I have to move furniture. I need to find some small baskets or something that will fit on the shelf to hold our gloves and stuff and then I'll be finished. I am so proud of how it turned out, like I can't stop looking at it and thinking, "That looks awesome!" And it's practical too. We can finally open the door without it bouncing back at us.
