Been dealing with Old Order Mennonites every since we moved here many years ago. When we first moved here they all lived in Single Wide Trailers all the Businesses were very simple. They were very strict in their ways but we visited with many and helped if they needed.
Things changed, they built Big Houses, expanded their Business, use to be they would work together where if one started a Business none of the others would take business from him, that all changed. Got to where it was all about money.
And there was changes in the Church younger ones wanted to break away and go with Electric and Cars. They started their own Church. Several of the ones wanting to hold to the Old ways left the area.
About 5 years ago there was a New Store built, they went with the Order that uses Electric. Well week ago brush and Timber was cleared out across the road. Seems one of the Owners of the store is upset because it isn't expanding fast enough so he is going to build a New Store across the road.

My Dad grew up in Lebanon, PA, in the heart of the PA Dutch area. He always said one reason the Mennonites and Amish persisted and grew in the face of changing times was that they were great businessmen who knew the value of a penny, and got every penny's worth of value for theirs. You have been around enough of them to know that the outside picture looks so similar, but their life choices are quite different, and often changing.

In my area we have a unique type who meet in church buildings instead of homes. There are some who are strict about the clothes, a few who are strict about electric and cars, then there are the ones who in business will use whatever is useful but stay out of anything too flashy and fancy. My husband has sold them iPads for business use. My Midwife wore the cape dress, apron, and kappe, I don't think she had a car, and did have indoor plumbing and electricity. Also they use a lot more convenience foods that I expected, but the common thread is frugality and simplicity.

There is one place that has very Good Restaurant during the Summer. Get more than your moneys worth in your Meal.
Thing is it is just across the holler from where we use to live and remember them first coming there.
Most in the area started Truck Farming for Wal Mart under contract. The started selling their own. Thing is Government is setting New Regulations, like Outhouses at each Field and places to wash. I know it is for Public Safety.

Ran around in Lancaster, Lebanon, & York counties. We hunted and fished these counties all our lives Presently live in York county. Still work in Lancaster County. The problem is sometimes they pinch those pennies so hard that ole Abe squeals. They want things built, but don't want to pay a fair price for it..But that is typical for this area.. Also the farm I grew up on is now in Amish hands.

Interesting about the price thing y'all mention. The ones near me offer the best deals on produce, plant starts, bulk foods, and services, they keep their prices bare minimum and mostly market to each other, but everyone local knows to go to them too. Somerset County PA here.

Sounds like the very temptation of greed that they avoid is catching up with them. I do have a healthy respect for their ideals and way of life.
