susannah, I am so glad to hear restaurant/bar owners that are looking out for their staff by implementing their own safety protocal. I DO NOT like the whole 'rat on your neighbor' plan. I do not like it Sam I Am.

And not all states are reporting COVID-19 deaths. So the numbers could be higher than they already are. And yes, someone who is terminally ill who gets the virus is reported as a virus death. But not all underlying health conditions would result in a person dying prematurely. No different than cause of death flu in either of the above.

Next weekend should be interesting. The first big holiday weekend of the summer season is normally crazy up here. We'll be doing what we do every year - staying at home. The small tourist towns around here have historically been packed every summer weekend but especially the holiday weekends. Because we're not fans of crowds - and not necessarily due to virus concerns - we almost always opt to stay home and/or stay on "our lake". Although addressing the virus concerns, social distancing would be very difficult if not impossible (but then again, we're not required to social distance here in Wisconsin anymore, right?)
Honestly, you can't even distance well out on the water, on your boat - at least on most lakes in the chain. I remember one year our son and his family were up over Labor Day weekend, it was gorgeous weather, he wanted to take the pontoon boat out on the more crowded part of the chain. Against our better judgement, we agreed to the trip. The lakes were packed with boats - it was crazy trying to maneuver around them especially on some of the channels. Having lived up here before, having spend most of our summers up here after moving away, and having lived here again for a number of years, we're very familiar with where the "quiet spots" are. So we immediately navigated through the masses to a smaller lake that kind of dead-ends rather than flows into another lake - so it gets much less usage. And we sat there, had lunch, saw only one other boat - and said "NEVER AGAIN" to long boat rides on holiday weekends (our lake having limited chain access, we normally see less than 10 boats out at a time ON holiday weekends).
To end this post on what I think is a happier note (or a cuter one, at least to me), that one boat that came onto the smaller lake while we were crowd-escaping? It was a "pirate ship" that people can rent - a big pirate ship, for parties and larger groups - and our grandchildren were over the moon happy to see it. I still smile when I picture our then-three-year-old granddaughter waving her hands, bopping around and screaming "Hi, pirates! HI PIRATES!" My husband, son and I had seen the pirate boat many times but this was the first time seeing it "up close and personal". We were so glad the little kids were there to see it - our grandson still counts it as one of his favorite memories on the lakes.
