Born Sunday. Has a broken leg. My boss gave her to me. She survived the trip home!
Numb splinted her leg temporarily but we're gonna have the vet out this morning to put a proper cast on it (if he thinks that's what's necessary). The break is in a hind leg down by her ankle. She can't get up on her own yet, but can stand once we pick her up.
She's gonna be a daddy's girl I think!
Keep a good thought for her please and for us, too ... the last thing we needed right now was a crippled calf to take care of. But, well, we'll roll with it I guess.

One more, before I leave for work to pay for all of this hoopla.
Oh, funny -- since most of our cows came from the herd that I milk, I asked my boss if he was running a "Buy 10, get one free," special. His wife said they would make us up a punchcard ...

She is so pretty ! Love her color and markings ! We don't have any cows, so this is the first time I've visited this here - and I'm glad I did ! She's adorable ! I grew up on a farm with beef cattle and always loved the babies.

Thanks everybody! The vet set her spiral fracture this afternoon; she'll be in full-leg cast for the next 4 weeks but the prognosis is good. She can stand up on her own now with the cast on! When I first saw her, it occurred to me that she looked a lot like Henrietta, my favorite cow at work a few years ago, before she did the splits and had to be euthanized in December 2016. (I lost her and Bitey in the same year.) Henny also had a white face with a black patch over her right eye. I checked the calf record books and it turns out they're from the same line! Angel's great-grandmother, Blondie, was Henny's grandmother. Maybe she will be throwback and have the same sweet personality.

Cow families or lines are important, there's a reason the old timers followed cow families instead of the hot new bulls like today.

What an adorable addition to the herd! But you better be careful cause if your cows keep getting younger it's gonna screw up turnover rate and then you'll be looking for another new place!
Best of luck with her! I'm sure she'll live up to her name! Enjoy and keep the pics coming!

Heck, at this point I'm just hoping to outlive all of them! We ain't gettin' any younger here. Yeah, this is an interest of mine. In the herd that I milk, I can tell you who most of the cows' mothers were, and who else they're related to. In another thread here I talked about our infamous 'twin line' and we have another family that is prone to lameness. Just the other day I was remarking to my boss' wife that a new heifer in the milking string, Beyonce, very much resembles her grandmother, Beth, while Beyonce's mother, Bionka, looks like *her* grandmother, Bette. I find this kind of thing endlessly fascinating, lol. I remember years ago, when I was a tester, I stopped by to drop off some paperwork for a farmer who had just sold his entire herd for slaughter through the CWT buy-outs back around 2006. And I remember him saying that the hardest part was seeing all those bloodlines come to an end. At the time, I didn't 'get' what he was talking about -- his cows were nothing special; his wasn't a high-producing herd -- but now that I'm older and have been at the same farm for more than a decade, I understand.

LOL, she had just finished her bottle! Numb wasn't sure we were feeding her enough because she is perennially hungry, so I shared with him the old farmer adage, "A hungry calf is a healthy calf."

Yes, she is getting really big and boisterous! That broken leg didn't stop her from jumping over the side of her first pen, lol. (Numb built her a bigger one with higher sides.)
She is nibbling on calf starter a bit, but would still prefer to bawl for milk. I joke that she has two settings, "HUNGRWWWYYY!" and "MOAR!!!!!"

Angel's cast is off! The broken bone knitted up nicely and she's beginning to walk on that leg now.
Also, she has a new best friend!

Oh my gosh, that video is amazing! I showed it to my husband (who, due to spending too many summers working on his uncles' dairy farms isn't normally a big fan of cows) and he was, well, almost enchanted by it. I watched it a couple of times myself, and will probably watch it again - and again.
She is adorable!

Thanks! I will have to make one of Numb trying to teach her to walk on a lead. It's hilarious! (But like I told him this morn, it isn't gonna get any easier the bigger she gets.)

Getting some encouragement from Daddy during her daily physical therapy ... She loves to crash around ... we have to be careful she doesn't re-injure herself!
