She is gonna be another Daddy's girl I'm afraid! With a healthy set of horns she better be.

Our baby is 6 weeks old tomorrow! Maybe I am just a proud cow parent but I think she looks much bigger and sturdier than the calves her age at work!
Edited to add: WOW! I just checked the Penn State Extension's dairy heifer growth chart. She is already 34" at the withers, and according to the chart, being that height at EIGHT weeks puts her in the 75th percentile!

Thanks! What happens when a calf grows up thinking she's a duck? I guess we're gonna find out ...

I just cracked up laughing from your comment. Please do let us know if she picks up any ducky habits. That is one great picture - and one adorable calf!

Just for fun, I checked the breeding log to see who Angel's daddy is. He's Delta-Lambda 551HO03379 ... looks to be a very good bull! www.stgen.com/sire-directory/dairy-bull-usa.aspx?code=551HO03379&language=english&title=similar-delta-lambdaNow we know where she gets her black spots from! Her mother, Peanut, is nearly all white, as was her mother, a cow I called Tippy because only the tips of her ears were black. I noticed the sire is +1.96 on stature ... no wonder Angel is so tall! Her mother is a big cow too. It seems we're raising Calfzilla here ...

Aww thanks! Numb says she got herself dirty today, so he gave her a bath with the hose. He said she didn't like it at first, but got used to it. He is making a very well-behaved cow out of her ... she'll already stand nicely while he picks up her feet, and he's even taught her to tolerate having her mouth opened and inspected. Of course we don't file down cows' teeth the way you do horses', but who knows when we might have to look in her mouth for some reason? So it will be useful if she's been trained to accept it. The other day, he was eating a banana and gave her a couple of pieces ... when he turned to walk away, she went running after him with her mouth open ... "MOAR!!!" So cute; wish I'd had the camera rolling.

Our baby is 8 weeks old today! Incidentally, it took several tries to get that nice pic. Most of them looked like this:

Thanks! She's due for another bag of milk replacer this week. That Land O' Lakes Amplifier Max is good stuff! She is eating about 3 lbs. of starter too.

Baby calves like the good feed, costs a little more to buy up front but cheap in the end.
I've never fed any Land of Lakes milk but know it is supposed to be good stuff.

I can't say anything bad about this milk replacer except I have to drive 45 miles to get it! She is definitely bigger and more robust than the calves her age at work. Of course, the excellent care "Daddy" gives her is probably a factor too! Long Legs Louise took another growth spurt.

Since her leg has healed so well and she's growing like a weed, will she eventually go into the milking string at your work?

No, she's ours now! She will lead a life of leisure like the rest of our cows.

No, they all kinda hang out with her! That's one of the ducklings ... they are as big as their momma now and some of the li'l drakes are bigger!
