What am I missing here? I hear ppl say how much they love it but the few times I've tasted it, it tastes spoiled to me. Is that what it's supposed to taste like or was it made wrong?

It should taste like normal tea.

I've never made it before but I remember when I was a kid my mom made it for a while. It was milder than regular tea. It didn't taste spoiled at all - it was only out in the hot sun for a few hours.
ETA I just googled "sun tea" and I have to laugh. In two different places I read that the reason to make it was because it's so hot outside that you can't stand the thought of boiling water - then it says you have to boil the jar to sterilize it first.

I'm sorry you've had bad luck with Sun tea! Maybe you just don't like it nothing wrong with that we all have different tastes!
The recipe I use the most is a very basic recipe that my mom has made for years and I've never noticed a spoiled taste. Clean glass jar, water, tea of choice, a loose fitting lid then set in the sun until done to taste (several hours). I then add sweetener of choice (if wanted) and serve with ice or refrigerate right away.
I look forward to hearing what others have to say and I hope they can help you more!☺

Sounds "made wrong" to me,I love the mild taste it brews for strong or bitter tea leaves. All it is, is steeped tea without Boiling water....a few hours of hot water from the sun instead. .....Come to think of it,the only "off" jar I ever had was forgotten and left out overnight and not remembered until the next noon. It did taste 'wrong' and I was real mad at myself because I had a cup of honey in that gallon jar too and had to dump the whole thing.....long time ago but you reminded me it Can taste bad. If someone had it sitting in the fridge, without straining it first, it might cause it to taste bad too.

I suspect any off taste came from not using a perfectly clean jug, or leaving it sitting out too long.
I'd rather just boil the water myself

I have had it a few times ... I thought it was ok....... but now I use Lipton cold brew .... no boiling needed ....you use cool water sweeten to taste ... put tea bags in pitcher with water for 5 minutes .... I leave mine a little longer... then stir.... don't get much easier than that .... and it is Good too .... bopeep

Properly made tea is what separates us from the animals. Sunshine is not the way to brew proper tea.

I prefer tea made from persimmon leaves harvested in fall after they turn color. Similar taste, less harsh than real tea leaves. Like everything, some years they are better than others.

Thank you. I suspect it was left out too long. Spoiled is really the best explanation of the taste. I may try to make it myself and see if I like the results.

I too find sun tea milder in taste even tho I leave it out a good long while ..Usually it ends up in the shade because of the suns movement ... For me it doesn't irritate my tummy as much as the tea my daughter brews in her ice tea maker ...but then again her friends call her tea "Crack in a Bottle" and she takes a gallon bottle with her to work to share every evening ..LOL
