Because people have been locked up and not going to work, many people have invested in a new puppy or kitten, or dog or cat. The bad breeders are taking advantage of this, Please do not buy a puppy on a whim. Please do not pay outlandish prices. Reputable breeders (those who breed best to best and do health tests) are unlikely to have puppies available because of the increased demand. You will be put on a waiting list.
Be wary of too good to be true advertising. This would include phrases like: we breed the best in North America. Anything that sounds like an ad for cars.
Reputable breeders do not cross breed and charge the same for mixed breed as for show quality (check the pedigree). There are mixed breeds/mutts out there, but they should cost considerably less than a purebred from show stock. Look at the parents for how well put together they are and if they are friendly.
Reputable breeders will have done tests to check for the common ailments in the breed (such as PRA in collies). Vet checked is not the same as DNA checked.
Anymore, good breeders keep their puppies longer than 8 weeks. Anyone selling you a puppy less than 8 weeks old is cheating you. They do this so they don't have to buy food or pay for vaccinations. You might be tempted to ask the breeder to keep your puppy longer, but the less than 8 weeks rule is a warning flag. Just keep looking. Anyone who feeds their bitch and puppies a cheap dog food does not have the best interests of your puppy at heart.

Good reminder Maura. And don't forget to check the shelters/rescues! All animals deserve a good home!
