Lumber prices inched above $1,000 per 1,000 board feet Thursday morning before falling back below that milestone, according to Random Length Lumber Futures for March. The high of $1,004.90 is double the price from just three months ago and a record.

I heard on the radio this morning that building homes, all new structures, fixer uppers, add ons etc. has dramatically dropped within the past 3 months...I guess the price of lumber is partially why.

I was driving by a junk store the other day and saw a bunch of 2x4's out front for $4.50 each. I thought that was weird so I looked online at Lowes and they were around $7. Wow, where have I been? Last time we bought some I think they were around $2. I guess $4.50 is a bargain now.

One article I saw indicated plywood is up 180% , since April last year. Another one said the lumber price increase would add $24,000 to the cost of the average new home. Seems like it would be more than that.

The more I see news like this, the happier I am that I bought plywood and subflooring last year, and the sadder I am that I didn't buy more!
Instead of plywood sheathing on the new sheds, I'll be using the chainsaw mill to cut live edge board and batten siding. I'll have to experiment with alternative roofing methods, too.
At least I have lots of trees down that I can turn into lumber, and I have a great source of good quality pallets to build with, too.
