DH and I covered 80 miles oh the trails today.
Traveled towards the city of Augusta, wi.
Basically an Amish community. Large farms, large gardens, large houses, with multiple generations. Many of their farms operate saw mills. Mountain high piles of saw dust. Mountain high piles of fresh cut logs and newly cut boards. Many of the men make beautiful furniture, while the ladies sew marvelous quilts.
They are all horse and buggy people. The farm and field work is all done with the use of draft horses or mules, with well polished harness hookups.
Each farm has a well insulated “ice house”. They harvest ice in the winter from creeks and ponds, by cutting it into blocks, packing it in sawdust, and store it in the “ice house” until it is needed in the HOT SUMMER.
No electricity ~~~~~~
A fairly recent activity to their area is Sand Mining. The sand in that location has some special properties that make it desirable for use if “fracking” of oil wells. It is a controversial subject! The sand that is harvested there is shipped out of the area by rail.
It was a perfect day weather wise for a long ATV ride. The bright orange butterfly weed was out in all its glory. The common milkweed blossoms and sweet clover radiated their scents. I harvested some wild lupine seeds to save for next year …. Most of the corn looks to be doing well with our recent rains giving it the boost it needed to be knee-high by the Fourth of July!
We saw lots of domestic farm critters ……. Cattle, horses and pigs! Not so much wildlife ….. just one wild Turkey and a partridge.
Good ice cream cone along the way ….. my choice of flavors today …. La Latte Da !
