Boy I'm beginning to wonder if I'm not getting in over my head here trying a different sock pattern. I sure wish someone could sit right beside me and show me how and what to do but beings you can't I'll just have to pretend. Outside of posting the whole pattern, which maybe I should so you'll know what I'm asking I'll try and be explicate at I can. Pattern says to cast on 40 sts then divide 13 sts onto first two needles and 14 sts onto third needle. K 2 P 2 for six inches then knit in rounds for one inch. I've done all that and am at this point, the point I don't understand. Make Heel
Slip last 10 sts from 3rd needle and first 10 sts from first needle onto one needle for the heel having contrast marker in center. Leave 20 sts on 2 needles for instep. Instep sts may be slipped onto st holder while working heel if preferred. Am I understanding this correctly? When it says to slip last 10 sts from 3rd needle and first 10 sts from first needle onto one needle, do I slip those 20 sts onto my 4th needle? Then do I divide the remaining 20 sts that are left on the 3rd and 1st needles between those two needles (1 st & 3rd needles) so that I again have my 4th needle to work with? To use Cyndi's phrase "was that clear as mud"?

Yes. you have understood that right, you should have all the heal stitches (20) on one needle and two other needles with 10 stitches on each. leaving needle four free to work with

Yes, as Skandi says. These are the times I wish patterns came with pictures that showed each step.

Thank you both so much. Hopefully no more questions ... about this pattern anyway. Patterns with pictures would be so nice that's for sure. Thanks again.

You're good to go. Basically, you're just setting up half the stitches for the instep and half for the heel flap.
Silver's sock class (@pearlb 's link) is great!

I suggest that you have the instep stitches (those you are not working on) on a circular needle. Easier to deal with and the stitches won’t fall off. I had the hardest time learning how to knit socks because of instructions like yours.
