I had Type 2 diabetes for 10 years and took two medications for it. I reversed my Type 2 diabetes by changing my standard american diet (SAD) to a whole food plant-based diet (WFPB). For the past three years, I no longer have to take any T2 medications. My A1Cs are in the 5.5 range.

Thank you Jolly and Cabin Fever for the info. Cabin Fever-that is wonderful to be able to change your diet and get your A1c down. Good for you! I have heard of many people reversing T2 diabetes by simply loosing weight. I went from 290# to 210# on a WFPB diet. So, I am not sure if it was the food or the weight loss that reversed the diabetes.

I was diagnosed with type II diabetes in 2018. Insurance paid for me to see a nutritionist who determined (based on me keeping a detailed food log for two weeks) that it wasn't that I was eating unhealthy food as much as I wasn't keeping my carbs balanced throughout the day. Way too many at dinner usually, even though they were good things like brown rice and sweet potatoes. . .
She set me a limit of 45 grams of carbs breakfast, lunch and dinner. It took me a while to figure out how to eat that many at lunch, where I was typically lacking; and how to keep to that few at breakfast and dinner. Portion control, mostly, and learning how to use lower carb veggies (good thing I like peppers, broccoli, carrots. . .) to fill my belly without having too much of the higher carb veggies.
If your insurance will cover a nutritionist, I highly recommend having your dh see one.
ETA: last fall I had gotten my A1C back to normal range (eating purposefully as well as taking 500 mg metformin 2x daily) and my Dr allowed me to cut the metformin to once a day. In January this year, my A1C had gone even lower, so I was able to stop the metformin all together. Today I'm still holding strong without meds by eating within my limits.
