Friday night, I was grieving 2 lost pets - and then a miracle and they were found. Here's the pretty amazing story.
We have 2 young cats destined to be FT barn cats. Inky (6mos), Binky (5 mos). We've had them for about 3 months and they are actually more friendly than our indoor cats are, lol. We enjoy them - they garden with us, work with us, have learned not to mess with a momma chicken and her chicks, and enjoy getting under the feet of the goats. Anyway, they are into everything as kittens are.
DH took our boat to a welder in another county Friday. Came back, no cats. We looked for hours. They are never far and they don't typically travel together, so both gone was unusual. Only thing we could figure is they got on the boat before he pulled out. We spent hours Friday night calling for them and walking the highway we live on. DH felt terrible. He got up at 4am Saturday and went walking again. 1.5 miles down the highway - the baby came crying to him. He was shocked - we figured we were looking for bodies. Now we were sure, they got on the boat and somehow got flung off the boat while it was going down the highway. Binky was home and we thought it was a miracle. DH and I split up and went back out - figuring we were looking for a body and closure on Inky. Even farther down the highway and up a side road, Inky came to him.
Both babies are unhurt but were terribly scared. They were shaking for the better part of the morning yesterday. Imagine getting flung out of a boat going 45 mph at least more than a mile from home as a kitten and we were able to find them unhurt.
I'm amazed and thankful.

I'm so happy you found both of them - they may have been shaken up, but they were alive and unhurt! That's the important thing. I was thrilled to read the happy ending!

My DH did a similar thing when he was an unpaid professional firefighter in the next county. When they got a call, he had such tunnel vision that it was scary. The two cats in our case were both adults who loved to sleep in the back of his truck and up until this incident, he NEVER remembered to check the bed. So, he gets to the fire and at some point, another firefighter called his attention to the cats sitting on top of the cab. He knew I'd have much to say if the cats disappeared so he was quick to catch them and put them into the cab where they waited patiently. The incident was only a mile or so from home so it's likely the cats could have found their way home but I was glad he didn't take that chance.
Glad you found your kitty babies in good condition!

Oh, that made me sad. So glad you were kind enough to go looking for them. A grown cat would have found its way home at only a mile, but maybe not kitten.
I'm always careful now when I get into my car. Gotta know where the cat is. She is probably 5 months old and likes to go under the car and up on a platform. So scared I will kill her. If she is outside and I don't see her I honk the horn.

Maura, DH did just that going to a fire call. I said he had tunnel vision. We had a litter of kittens from a cat dumped at our house. The runt of the litter was DH's favorite and he'd just finished feeding her scrambled egg from the tip of his finger about 10 minutes before the call came in. He didn't wait for me to be sure all the kittens were away from the truck. When that kitten saw him come outside, she ran to him. As he backed out of the driveway, he saw her body, stopped and brought the kitten to me to fix. You can't fix a partially crushed skull and he felt terrible. I was so aggravated with him, I'm afraid I didn't give him a word of consolation but I did deal with the little body before he came home.

So glad your kittens are home, safe and sound if a little rattled. Hopefully they learned a valuable lesson and will stay far away from that boat! mogal, so sorry you and your hubby had to deal with that. I'm sure it's something that has stayed with him. so sad.
