So far it has not been a very productive year for the sap run. Just been too cold but today we did collect about 100 gallons.
That will yield us a generous 2 gallon of syrup….. Actually only 1 gallon for our house. We haul our sap to a Mennonite neighbor who cooks it down for halves. He keeps half the finished product, we get the other half.
We share the syrup with all our children. We usually need about 4 gallons each season to keep everyone happy.
Hopefully we will get a couple more gallons before the season ends. But with just a couple sunny days, all the trees will begin to bud out, and there will be no more sap.
And …. The Mennonite neighbor will be wanting to get out in his fields for spring planting leaving no more time to tend the cook stove.
This may be our last year for tapping trees. DH will soon be 80 and his body is showing its age. He would not have tapped this year …. Except kids and grandkids promised to help.
Ten year old SKIPPED school today and has been out helping in the woods. His Mama said a “Day in the woods with the Papa” was a better lesson than sitting inside school all day!

To which I say: AMEN if that Papa is anything like MY Papa.

As a retired teacher, I fully agree it is a better lesson!
