The Wild Elderberries are on bloom!
The town road ditches are loaded with them. Now the trick will be to wait until they ripen ……. And then ……. Get to them before the birds eat them all.
This year there should be plenty for ALL of us ….. but the wildlife are not usually familiar with the concept of “sharing”.
Probably putting the horse before the cart …. But this may be an opportunity to have the grandchildren harvest enough to take to our local produce auction. Could be a small “business opportunity” for them ……. A learning situation.

Ours have developed the little berries, still hard and green. We have a lot of elderberries out on our road easement but the birds usually get those as well as their being coated with dust. We have some along our wet weather creek and here in the yard, some I planted, some planted by the birds. I'm planning to cover the heads of all accessible berries with nylon net to keep the birds away from them. I use the steam juicer I got at a friend's auction to make juice from them then use that against colds and flu.

I transplanted all mine this spring so I didn't expect any to bloom but some did. I canned extra last yr b/c this was my plan. I usually put some in our smoothies. I only started with 2 plants and they multiplied very well for being in such dry area. I moved them so I could water easier.
