Since I started participating in the Kairos prison ministry, I have acquired a new Biblical hero. But this Biblical hero does not appear in the Bible.
About two thousand years ago, in the country we call Israel today, there was a somewhat average mother. She worked constantly just to keep her family clothed and fed. One day she heard the widow who lived next door crying. The mother knew the widow was without family and likely hadn't eaten in days. That day she made one extra serving and had her child take it to the widow. From that day on when the mother made meals she made another portion for the widow which was delivered by her child. The mother could sometimes hear the child and the widow laughing. Even though food was sometimes meager, there was always enough for the widow. Other than that, there was no other noteworthy charity in the mother's life. She was an ordinary mother who sometimes yelled at her children, had pity parties, and envied others.
Too soon, the mother got sick and died. Her soul was found itself in God's presence. God's presence is a very busy place with all the prayers and Satan's shenanigans and mansion construction going on. It was Jesus who first noticed her. Oh no one told her was Jesus, but when you get to Heaven you'll know him. And then God himself looked at her and smiled.
Others stopped what they were doing to see what had captured the Father's and Son's attention. For a brief moment she heard the sound of one person clapping and then suddenly it was like thousands clapping. Those that were sitting stood up. In the midst of thunderous clapping a countless host started cheering. The mother was terrified. But she saw Jesus' eyes looking into her own and felt safer.
The ovation went on for weeks (time is different in Heaven). Eventually Jesus raised hand and things got still and quiet. The mother was overwhelmed with confusion. Jesus knew her thoughts and said, "Be at peace little sister. But you are quite renown here." The mother replied, "But I am simple and ordinary. I never did anything anyone noticed." Jesus replied, "Your child shared all he had. From this I fed thousands because I loved them and their hunger made me sad. I told my followers if they loved me, they should likewise feed the hungry. Because they love me, my followers will feed billions of hungry people and from these acts hundreds of millions will know to know the Father's love for them."
With pride, the mother said, "Yes, my son is such a good boy and he is rightfully blessed, but what could I have done that you should notice me?" Jesus replied, "You are the one who taught him to share," and added with a smile, "You also made the fives loaves of bread."
Before Covid the population of Hughs Unit was over three thousand. Additionally there was about six to seven corrections officers and administrative staff. So we were giving a dozen cookies to almost four thousand people. Jesus fed four thousand with just five loaves of bread. But we are not Jesus. We need a lot of help. To everyone who has ever baked Kairos cookies, the world may not remember or notice what you did, but your God will.
