Grapevines are best suited to warm and sunny locations that have well-draining soil. In these ideal conditions, grapevines can grow vigorously and produce an abundance of fruit. Within each category, there is a choice of varieties, take care to choose a variety to suit your climate and soil. Grapevines are usually sold in containers as young plants with a length of about 50 – 60cm (2ft). It is recommended to plant grapevines during their dormant period, In regions that experience cold winters, it is advisable to plant them in March. Prioritizing grapevines with thicker stems than that of a pencil is essential to ensure that they do not get damaged by the cold. Prepare the soil by digging it thoroughly, making sure to break up any compacted areas and get rid of any weeds. You can enhance the soil quality by adding either homemade compost or well-rotted manure. After planting, water the vines regularly throughout the first year. The root system needs to grow and gain strength. The first two or three years, each early spring, apply some compost around the base of the vines. Grape vines grow vigorously and might need a nutrient boost each year. Keep grass and other plants from growing under grapevines. Pruning: New grape growers are often surprised about how much of the vine gets removed during pruning. In an average vineyard, 80-90% of the new growth is pruned off each early spring. This is because grapes are produced on new shoots, not old branches. You can read about this in a bit more detail and pictures here.
