I saw a post on facebook about the costs of quilts. They broke down the cost & for a finished 65" quilt had the price at $852.65. I decided to breakdown the costs of my quilts because I hand sew & hand quilt all of them. Here is what I came up with.
What do you all think? I have never put more than $700 on one of my quilts. Maybe I should price them higher? The largest one I have is a king size tulip applique.
WHY DO QUILTS COST SO MUCH??
A breakdown for the costs of materials, construction, & finishing a quilt
Materials
Quilt top for cross stitch/embroidery/appliqué = $75-$100
Fabric for backing (6-9 yards x $4 per yard) = $24-$36
Batting = $15-$20 depending on size of quilt
Binding = $10
Thread for cross stitch/embroidery/appliqué = $25
Total for materials = $149 - $191
Construction
(labor estimated @ $10 per hour)
Sewing the top = 40-50 hours = $400 - $500
Assembling the quilt = 1 hour = $10
Hand Quilting = 80-100 hours = $800 - $1,000
Thread for quilting = $5
Total for construction = $1,215 - $1,515
Finishing
Attaching the binding = 2 hours = $20
Total cost of quilt = $1,384 - $1,726
***A larger quilt or more intricate pattern or top will increase the cost of the quilt***

Your quilts are beautiful Wendy! Some people like to brag about how much they pay for things, your quilts could easily bring more than you are asking. I might try raising the price of one to near the highest on Esty or on some of the Amish sites. There is a Mennenite Church group here that will hand quilt for you, it is close to a thousand dollars to have a large quilt hand quilted. That would make yours a real bargin.

Thank you! I would love to sell some at times. It would support my addiction of quilting. I don't want to let them go too cheap though as I have a lot of work in them.

I shared that on FB as well. I would get people who would come into my shop and tell me they could buy quilts for $40 in Gatlinburg. Different clientele than I was looking for. I want people to buy my quilts who appreciate the value and time spent making them.
