This is my families' first spring farther away from the city. In the past I have had minor allergies in the spring and fall, no big deal, take a Benadryl at night and it seemed to cover me for the daytime too. Well, I have been out of commission since Wednesday morning, barely able to breathe, short of breath, chest congestion, activity has been extremely limited. I did an albuterol breathing treatment with a nebulizer today, as a last resort. I am feeling much better, still not myself but able to walk across a room without breaking out in a cold sweat and wheezing. My question is, has anyone else experienced this before? Can different pollens really affect a person so much that they consider the ER? I have to practically be dead for any complaints other than childbirth, so I am not used to just popping off to the doctor for any complaint. I'm hoping that Benadryl and the nebulizer can get me through this, just wondered if anyone has any other practical advice?

Yes. Start eating local raw honey. It will take a little time but you will build up a resistance to local allergens. Local raw milk is helpful too if you can get it.
I can sympathize. I dread this time of year when there's a coating of yellow on everything!
ETA: You might want to consider being tested to see what you are allergic too. If you're in a new house there could be things there you've never been exposed to before. Honey and milk will only help with plant based allergens obviously. I'm guessing that's what it is though.

Thank you my3boys. Raw honey will help. I have no access to raw milk, last I heard it is illegal to sell it in Ohio. We have had a few mice in the house, so that might contribute also. I think we are in the clear for mold/mildew as I can always smell it. We have a lot of flowering bushes and trees right now, so I expect they are the culprit. I love the flowers, I will just have to admire from a distance (and not smell the sweet perfume they have!) thank you again

Milk and honey. We went through it, too. My wife and son, mostly. The first summer sounds like you describe. No complaints at all this year. This will be our 4th summer. Each year was better than the year before.

Some years seem to be worse than others. This year was a worse year. The oak, pecans and privet were all blooming at once and we were miserable. I have tried local honey before, it is a mild help for a mild season and you must take it for a full year before you start to see any benefits. In the meantime, Benadryl every 4 hours. Shower everyday to remove any pollens you might have gotten on you when you were outside, and rest. A pot of steam with a couple of drops of oregano oil will help to temporarily break up for sinus congestion. Breathe in through your nose and each breath you will be able to breath deeper. Close you eyes while you have your head over the steam as the oregano oil, even just a little, can make your eyes burn. Only a couple drops of the oregano oil as it is very strong potent stuff. Blessings, Kat

Thanks Kat for the oregano oil idea, I will try that. I am glad to hear that this may improve with time, it is a relief!
