18,000 cows killed in explosion, fire at Texas dairy farm may be largest cattle killing ever
I don't understand the explanation. Pictures might help but i wouldn't look at them. The dairy is near Nazareth, about 70 miles southwest of Amarillo.
Texas ranks fourth in national dairy production.
What do you do with 18,000 carcasses? BYOBS (bring you own barbeque sauce)?

"A single cow produces between 154 to 264 pounds of methane gas per year."
So 18,000 x 200 = 3,600,000 pounds or 1,800 tons of methane per year.
Maybe the explosion was caused by someone striking a match to light a cigarette? Just one more reason for people to quit smoking.

I can't imagine that number of cows on one farm. Not even the Dutch farmers are close to that number.

I saw pictures of that dairy on youtube this morning. The building was huge! Actually, huge is an understatement. Massive might be a better word. If someone had asked me if any dairy farm could have that many cows, I would have said no. Such a waste. Between all the processing plants, bird flu, fertilizer shortages etc., our food supply is definitely in trouble. If you don't garden/homestead, this might be a good time to start!

I'm sure that not all cows were in milk. But, even accounting for cows not in the building with those in milk, an astounding number. I wonder how many employees they have.
One person can take care of 40 cows, but I imagine that operation is so efficient you could go 60.

According to the news, the cows that died were in a holding area, waiting to be milked. But of course, they could have been mistaken. I just can't fathom any farm with 18,000 head. It's mind boggling to me.

Someday, with the right chemicals and the right processes, we will be able to turn dairy cow feed and water into milk without the dairy cows or the methane. Not something I care to live to experience.

I think humanities new mantra should be "Just because we can, doesn't mean we should". There are many things coming that I wish I wasn't going to see.
