Our 9 day hunting season ended today. I did not hunt this year but some of the grandkids and their friends hunted in our woods. They harvested a total of 3 deer from our 40 acres. The talk after church today was that there just weren't many deer around this year. Most hunters came home without any venison. So .... I'm quite pleased that the hunters in our woods managed to get 3 of them.
They did say there are several groups of sizable turkeys in our woods. Probably at least a 100 plus. Got to get an application sent in for a spring turkey 🦃 permit !

We are a normal size county. It is estimated that we, and the county just to the east have a deer population of about 160,000, the most in the State. If there are not at least 60,000 harvested in hunting season it is chaos and catastrophe on the roads.

Years ago we had many deer and many woods. Now there are houses built in most areas where the deer used to be. For the past 5 or 6 years they deer have become abundant. It's so strange to see one on a main road here!!! Many have drowned in the Creek and a few hit by cars. I don't know how they got back here and so many, but I do love that they're back!

As long as they aren't pressured too hard, deer can adapt pretty well to even the suburbs (if they have some intermittent woods and browsing areas).
Had a good buddy who used to get two or three deer every year, bowhunting next to a suburb in Jackson, Mississippi.
