Sadly eating slices of Mrs. Smith apple pie. Not enough apples! Crust too much of it, doesn't taste good (mayeb I underbaked it). My best apple pies are store bought crust (only crust I make well IMO is tort crust) with heaps of apples when I have the right kind. Last pie half the apples too mushy and sweet. Thought they'd be alright- same type as the ones our tree last place gave us for a killer pie. Any recommendations for a better pie where I won't have to peel 40 apples? Bearable when it was my own tree anyway- and I'd peel until my hands were dissolving in the juice to freeze pies worth of apples (in a 1-2 gal ziploc set in my pie tins in the freezer until solid, pops into pie shell when you bake), then take a break. No stress with holiday meal at same time as that.
I haven't yet tried canned apple pie filling. Have one waiting malevolently in the cupboard.

Sorry I don't have any recommendations because I always make my own crust, and I don't use canned filling either. But an easy alternative is an apple crisp, which I think my family actually prefers over the pie, even though the filling is the same. And it saves me from having to make a crust too!

I always make my own apple pies, so can't recommend a brand of pie or crust. . . But, if you want to go with a pre-made crust and slice your own apples, our hands down favorite for a non-mushy pie is Granny Smith apples.
