We're just in from feeding the animals. Yes, WE. DH, bless him, has been helping with evening chores and went out this morning so I wouldn't have to be exposed to the cold so long. It was 8o ambient, -8o with the wind chill. I know that's nothing to you of a more northerly persuasion but to us, that's wicked. Of course, our Pyrs think it's lovely and DH just commented that he wished our almost 9 mo old Anatolian/Pyr mix Rose would go to the barn. She's curled up in the lee of some bushes, happy as a clam. I don't know where the adult dogs are. But all the outside critters are fed and now it's our turn. I'll take hot water out to the goats after breakfast because I know they won't go out to their trough to drink cold water. Tonight the Chiefs will play in Kansas City. Unfortunately, it won't be broadcast except on radio. Even if someone gave me tickets, I'd decline. Oh, well. Actually, I would decline anyway as I can probably see more on my own TV, have my own much cheaper/healthier snacks close by and a private restroom always available

Baby, that’s cold outside mogal, this is a very strange winter here. We’ve had so much rain, almost every day for two weeks. Our street was flooded at the very end near the creek beach day before yesterday. It covered the whole bottom of our road and up to the two last houses front lawns. Today it’s 60 and sunny outside, strange days indeed.😧

It's cold here but Thank the Lord it's not that cold. High today is suppose to be close to 30 low 12 which I can handle but oh that wind. Actually feel is 0. Tomorrow 20 below with wind chill. I think I'm skipping church tomorrow. Nothing close to what you have. I have 2 donkeys & 7 goats. The donkeys have a heater in their water trough. Can't do that for goats. They'll chew the cord. I haul out warm water a few times a day. I always add a little Karo or molasses to get them to drink more when it's so cold. I put some in buckets for the donkeys.

It was -13o when we went out to tend the animals, -24o wind chill. It's just after 1 p.m. and current temp is -2. I don't know what the wind chill is but just got an alert on my phone that we can expect strong gusty winds within the hour. UGH.
I know Cabin Fever, Wind in Her Hair, Maura, et. al., are laughing at me. Be my guest. I know I'm being a crybaby...

Our high temp for today was -1 and it's back down to -4 at 8:30.
When we brought the dogs in to feed them tonight, Rose, the almost 9 mo old puppy that is taller, broader and longer than either of the adult Pyrs had to be led back outside. She has a nice dense coat but not so long as the Pyrs'.

We had snow and sleet last night. Many would call it a dusting. At 6 am we are at 11 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind chill of -3 degrees. We have now had over 31 hours of freezing temperatures. This is no way for a human being to live. But as we are a wicked and sinful people, I have no doubt that it is deserved (some more than others). 106 degrees and above can admittedly be miserable and even dangerous. But compared to this poo, it is a party.

This morning it is -15 with a high of-5 forecasted for today. Windchills will be -35 to -45. Actually this is nothing for our area. It's the first cold weather for the year so it seems bad, also winter had a late start. We have had plenty of 2-3 weeks stretches of below zero weather in the past. Still not a lot of snow though. We still don't have enough to groom for the snowmobiles.

Bowdonkey, what's a snowmobile?
Just kidding. I've seen them on TV, never been anywhere near one of those critters. When I still had my horses, I always rode bareback in winter because they were so warm instead of a cold saddle. Can't imagine multiplying the wind chill riding a snowmobile. I know you dress for it including goggles but even so...
It's -10 right now. Don't want to know the wind chill as we haven't been out to tend the animals yet.
I broke out more winter gear since we have to go to Columbia for my check up. This isn't one where I need to get "nekkid," thank goodness, but just the thought of driving in this cold 35 miles with the possibility of snow coming in doesn't excite me. I'm wearing extra layers and plan to throw a pair of insulated overalls and my extra thick, extra warm camo hunting coat into the truck before we leave. Yes, I'm a wimp.

Better to be a warm wimp and read the frozen tragedies that beset others while you sip hot chocolate inside your toasty home.

bluemingidiot, I checked the temperature at 6 this morning and it was 14 degrees here in SE Ohio! But we are going to be about 6-7 more days before we get above freezing.

Yeah, but you people don't know any better. We do. On average, there are 237 sunny days per year in Mason County. The US average is 205 sunny days. Our average daily low in January is 32. Our average daily high is 59 degrees.
36 continuous hours now below freezing. 10:30 am and the temperature is already a toasty 18 degrees.

Per our usual practice, despite the below zero temps, we got out for our Sunday church services. We were surprised to hear a few other churches in our area had canceled their services due to the cold.
They should all take a lesson from our horse and buggy Menonite neighbors!
In this sub-zero weather, they need to go out in the cold, lift the heavy harness up on the horse and get all those snaps and buckles lined up. Next the buggy comes out of the shed and gets lined up behind the horse …
In the meantime, Mama gets all the children dressed with their warmest stockings, leggings and mittens.
And, the family joins their neighbors in Praising our Lord. Yes, it’s COLD OUTSIDE! But It’s Sunday … It’s the Sabbath 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

At 3:30 pm we are up to 25 degrees. 46 hours without sunshine is almost as bad as the 41 hours below freezing. Snow and sleet was pretty and peaceful looking this morning. But snow is like a woman's make up, it needs continual touching up. Now there are more and bigger gaps and holes among the sleet and snow than in a drawer of underwear and socks in the Depression.

Interesting observation. We had to go to Columbia, a city of around 100K with students at 3 local colleges. As we approached we couldn't explain why the temp read out had gone from -4 at our house to +8o in town. As we went home, the temp dropped to 4o and that's where it is now. The only explanation we could come up with was that with all the buildings and pavement, Columbia was a heat sink though a small one. Still cold.
Got a good report from the doc.
Those Mennonite/Amish buggies all have spaces for soapstone blocks heated on the stove at home and for special heaters that hold live coals. Think a Dutch oven in reverse. Don't they usually hold services in neighbors' homes rather than a separate church?

Our horse and buggy neighbors all have churches. Electric but no running water. All services are spoken in Pennsylvania Dutch. We also have "rubber tired" Mennonites nearby. They drive vehicles, thus, the "rubber tired" label. Their vehicles are most usually black. Their church buildings are modern buildings (with plumbing). Their services are spoken in English. A few miles to the north of us are where the old Order Amish live. They meet in homes for their Church Services. Our community/neighborhood is a very interesting one!

17 degrees at 9 am, Tuesday. Clear blue skies and sunshine for the first time since Saturday afternoon, thank you Jesus! Gray skies are like soda pops. They are most enjoyable if you haven't had one for a while, but they quickly become unpleasant. Especially in winter.

Central Arkansas here - about 2" of snow on the ground - 2nd morning temp low of 7 deg; high 20 deg. Tomorrow forecast to get above freezing for first time since last Friday. This weekend another deep freeze, lows about 10 deg with highs in the 20's. Enough winter and snow for me, ready for spring. I planted broccoli and cabbage this week to get plants started -- forever the optimist.

Snow here this morning also. All local schools closed. It is still in the teens for actual temperature. Now they are saying it will be ZERO tonight with windchills of -14 to -16 degrees. It is sunny though which is rare and the house is 72 degrees with the fire going!!!

We got a couple inches of snow the day after it was 60 and oh so windy! Today it's 20 feels like, I don't know didn't hear the wind chill and didn't get out yet. Got to be very careful there's a lot of ice on top of the snow and under it!

We had a brief respite last Wednesday and Thursday from the awful cold and wind chills. It felt almost tropical though barely above freezing. We went back into the deep freeze Thursday night and here we are. Even the supposedly freeze proof faucet at the barn has frozen. Oh, joy! Right now, the temp is 21o, broken clouds and sun, though the clouds are winning. We have up to .1" of ice in the forecast through tomorrow at noon but much less troublesome than what gran29 and others in Arkansas are expecting--as much as 1/2" of ice which can damage the whole of the infrastructure.
I'm such a weather junkie and one of my morning routines is check national weather on my phone or on the internet. One night when we still lived north of KC, I checked the 5 p.m. weather report and the forecaster wasn't too concerned about the incoming snow. I was because this being before the days of cell phones, I worried more than usual about DH who had a 25 mile drive home on I-35. I went on out to tend our animals and looked at the weather again during the 6 p.m. broadcast. In less than an hour, the weatherman had upgraded his forecast to near blizzard conditions. Fortunately, DH got home safely and by the time he had to leave for work the next morning, the roads were all but clear.
I am so not a fan of winter.

Stratosphere’s current behavior unexpected and somewhat rare. The polar vortex seems to be more disrupted at the lower levels, closer to the stratosphere-troposphere boundary. The forecast average suggests the vortex will cease its shenanigans and strengthen again back to its normal speed. www.climate.gov/news-features/blogs/polar-vortex/polar-vortex-acting

After days of below freezing temps and snow and ice, we are now dealing with mud and huge potholes. Guess that's the downside to winter. But at least the snow was pretty while it was falling. But let's change the channel to Spring now. Please?

Yes here too, mud! It's raining again, all week. It's been warm in the 40's. This is so confusing this weather in winter! I just ran around the house for a half hour to get my steps in. I've been walking in the rain, but just can't push myself out there today.

We had a minor ice event Monday (the 22nd?) and since then even overnight temps have been above freezing. Unfortunately, we haven't seen the sun in far too long and it's getting bothersome/depressing. Next week, we should have some and the WX guys are saying into the upper 50's, almost 60o. I don't want that to hang around long enough to make the trees break dormancy.
The deer are getting bolder since all the various hunting seasons have ended. Yesterday morning, there were 5-6 no more than 75 yds from me, just across the pasture fence. I hope the dogs will keep them out of the yard because the deer don't do a very good pruning job. The ice broke a limb off a peach tree--I haven't gone out to see what clean up we need to do with the stump.

Raining here, again. Ugh. I don't know how much longer I can take not seeing the sun. The WX people claim that this will end tonight and for the next 5 days it should be sunny. I'll believe that when I see it. The high will only be in the 40's but at least it will climb above freezing during the day. I keep myself going by telling myself that every rainy, dreary day brings us one day closer to Spring. But even that isn't really helping anymore!

Hot here too. We set a new heat record yesterday. Was 32 in1886, we smashed it, new record is now 36. I'm glad I was alive to witness that milestone.
